Holiday apartment in Montorfano: Lake, Nature and History
Montorfano combines Lago di Montorfano with protected natural areas, traces of history and special opportunities for active days on holiday. When choosing a holiday apartment in Montorfano, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: lake and landscape, walks and cycle paths, cultural history or golf.
Lake and nature reserve
The Lago di Montorfano Nature Reserve was established by the Regional Council of Lombardy by Resolution No. 1796 of 15 November 1984. The nature reserve covers 89 hectares, of which 51 hectares are occupied by the lake. It extends across Montorfano and Capiago Intimiano in the Province of Como. Lago di Montorfano is the smallest of the Brianza lakes. Dense reed beds line almost all of its shores and provide a refuge for several bird species. The special character of the area therefore lies not only in the water itself, but also in the combination of lakeshore, woodland and protected habitats.
Walks, cycle path and swimming
For an easy walk, an access point from the village roads leads to a lakeside path along Lago di Montorfano. The complete circular route is approximately 4 km long. At the same time, the lower lakeside path of the Lago di Montorfano Nature Reserve is closed to through traffic because of the sensitive habitats it passes through. The upper woodland path, which runs through the reserve's wooded area, is also accessible by bicycle. The rules of the nature reserve permit swimming throughout Lago di Montorfano; however, you must check with the municipal administration or the ATS which areas are actually open for swimming.
Church and icehouses: the history of Montorfano
The first records of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Montorfano date back to 1044. In 1578, it was completely rebuilt. San Carlo consecrated the church and its main altar on 12 July 1582. Another historical trace is provided by Montorfano's former icehouses. They were located in the immediate vicinity of the lakeshore and were generally circular structures in cool locations, some of them built below ground level. The oldest icehouse, „Giazerùn“, lies southwest of Cascina Incastro; today, only ruins remain.
Golf and educational trails
The Circolo Golf Villa d’Este is also part of Montorfano's landscape. It is located at Via per Cantù 13, 22030 Montorfano (CO). The 18-hole golf course was designed in 1926 by architect Peter Gannon. In addition, Parco Valle Lambro offers special projects relating to the Lago di Montorfano Nature Reserve. Alongside schools in the area, the educational trails through the protected areas, including the Lago di Montorfano Nature Reserve, are also open to other interested educational institutions.
Which holiday apartment suits your holiday
A holiday apartment in Montorfano is especially worth considering as a base if you would like to combine nature observation, a short circular walk, cycling, planning for swimming and historical discoveries. Those focusing on culture will find different points of interest in San Giovanni Evangelista and the former icehouses than visitors whose stay is more oriented towards the lake, the woodland path or the golf course. This allows you to choose your accommodation according to your own holiday priorities, without limiting Montorfano to just one type of travel experience.
