Discover Maslianico – Pre-Alps, Historic Trails and Culture

Maslianico stretches from flat terrain along the eastern slopes of Monte Bisbino; the landscape is typical of the Lombard Pre-Alps.

Between Bisbino, Streams and Limestone

The Breggia is fed by several short streams that rise on the slopes of Bisbino, flow down steep, almost parallel valleys and empty into the Breggia. The summit of Monte Bisbino is located in the immediate vicinity of Maslianico. The mountain Monte Generoso and the mountain Punta Caldera are also nearby. In the wider regional area lies the summit of Cima del Costone. Moltrasio limestone is visible at numerous road cuttings in the upper part of Maslianico and in the disused small Cava dei Pini quarry.

Historic Trails and Border Paths

The mountainous part of Maslianico has numerous historic paths and routes leading through the town’s forests to neighbouring municipalities. The La Tana trail leads to La Tana cave, one of three known caves near the hamlet of Scaletto, located at elevations between 420 and 480 metres. The Lake Como Poetry Way leads from Valico di Roggiana in Maslianico via Cernobbio and Como to Brunate. The route from Valico di Roggiana to Brunate helps with day planning because the starting point and destination are fixed. Along the Lake Como Poetry Way there are Little Free Libraries where hikers can take and leave books. The Scala di Ronda was used by border guards to monitor the steep border slopes; an original barbed-wire barrier and a reconstructed guard hut are located there. Some paths at the Roggiana border crossing were also used by smugglers in the past.

Churches, Mill Canal and Exhibitions

The Roggia Molinara is an old artificial canal that already existed in the Middle Ages and carried water from the Breggia to the mills that once stood between Maslianico and Cernobbio. The Santa Teresa Sanctuary has a single nave and is designed in the Lombard-Romanesque style; the interior wall decoration was completed in 1955. The existence of the Chiesa comparrocchiale di Sant’Ambrogio in Maslianico has been documented since 1290. The interior wall decoration therefore dates from a later period than the documented evidence of its existence dating back to 1290. LA VOCE DEL COLORE is a traditional painting exhibition in Maslianico that has reached its 15th edition.
