Carugo combines a distinctive natural landscape with a rich local history. The Fontana del Guercio, historic churches, and La Torre provide tangible points of reference between nature and the history of the town.

Woodland and Fontana del Guercio

The Fontana del Guercio is a regional nature reserve established by Regional Law No. 86 of November 30, 1986. The Parco delle Groane lists the Fontana del Guercio near Carugo as one of its three Sites of Community Importance.

Within the nature reserve, the Fontana del Guercio has a nature trail with eight information panels. The Fontana del Guercio covers between 27.8 and 35 hectares, lies entirely within the municipality of Carugo, and is mostly forested. The small lake serves as a breeding ground for amphibians. The natural landscape also includes the Testa del Nan spring, formerly known as del Neno, which is the source of the Borromeo Canal. The nature trail with eight information panels and the small lake offer two different focal points for observing nature in Carugo.

Churches and traces of local history

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo is located on Piazza San Bartolomeo in the built-up center of Carugo. The present building was constructed between 1933 and 1936, replacing the former church at the foot of the Torre hill. The feast day of San Bartolomeo falls on August 24 and is traditionally celebrated in Carugo on the second Sunday of September.

At the entrance to Carugo on the road to Giussano stands the Santuario di San Zeno. The church of San Zeno is mentioned in the writings of the 13th-century historian Goffredo da Bussano. The Santuario was originally dedicated to the holy bishop of Verona and was later dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

The Chiesetta di S. Martino stands on a plateau on the border between Carugo and Mariano, where the Roman road between Milan and Como once ran. The historic sites extend from the town center to the entrance to the town and the plateau on the border with Mariano. Between Carugo and Pozzolo there is also the Cappella di Sant'Ambrogio, accessible via a path that begins at the Fontana del Guercio. The medieval tower La Torre is one of the few still-visible examples of medieval architecture in Carugo. The Museo della Brianza nel Novecento is also located in Carugo, while the Associazione Museo „Nel Novecento“ APS preserves and disseminates the memory and history of Brianza in the 20th century.
