Hiking trails through forests with panoramic views

The Anello di San Domenico circular trail leads from Breglia to a viewpoint near the Cappella di San Domenico and passes the Santuario della Madonna di Breglia along the way. Another hike to the Rifugio Menaggio begins just beyond the village near a small church. It initially follows a paved road, then continues through the forest and reaches the hut after 15 minutes via a particularly scenic section. When planning this stage, both the paved road section and the subsequent forest path must be taken equally into account. Birch trees and broom grow along the Monte Grona trekking trail.

Churches, pilgrimage route and traces of history

The Santuario della Madonna di Breglia rises on the summit of Monte Gordola. It is a symbol of local devotion to the Virgin Mary and remains a pilgrimage destination to this day. The temple was built in the second half of the 18th century and houses a venerated marble statue of the Madonna. The sanctuary is set amid greenery and is reached via a Way of the Cross dedicated to the “Mysteries of the Rosary”.

The Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno dates in its present form from 1873 and replaced an older church that had been destroyed by a major landslide. It preserves numerous works from the former church, including a late-16th-century altarpiece depicting San Gregorio Magno, San Domenico and San Francesco. Slightly above the Chiesa di San Gregorio stands the Palazzo Lucini (Palazzone). The villa was probably built at the beginning of the 19th century as the Lucini family’s summer residence. From 1892 onward, it was the home of the poet Gian Pietro Lucini and his wife Giuditta Cattaneo.

At the entrance to the Breglia cemetery is the Tomba tardoromana, a Roman-era inhumation burial dating from the 6th century AD. It was discovered in 1982 during extension work at the cemetery and was constructed from five granite slabs.

The peaks Cima del Nipoti and Costone del Bregagno are located in the immediate surroundings of Breglia. Monte Pizzone and Cima dell' Oress are peaks in the area around Breglia. The wider surrounding region also includes the Museo Moto Guzzi and the Collezione Giancarlo e Danna Olgiati as museums, Castello Sasso Corbaro as a castle, and Palazzo Secchi as a palace.
