San Vigilio Among Churches and Trails

San Vigilio combines sacred art, historic trails and panoramic hillsides to create a destination with many different discoveries. The parish church of San Vigilio e San Gregorio Magno and the Santuario Madonna della Stella represent churches and art; the Via Valeriana, the Sentiero degli Alpini and the Sentiero 3V add a variety of trails. Museums in the surrounding area provide further cultural attractions.

Churches, Art and History Passed Down Through the Generations

The parish church of Saints Vigilio and Gregory the Great was built in 1237 and elevated to the status of a parish church in 1632. The parish church of San Vigilio e San Gregorio Magno contains a painting from 1569 whose fresh, dynamic and brilliant technique recalls the luminosity of Titian's work.

The Santuario Madonna della Stella contains an altarpiece by Romanino depicting the Madonna and Child with a star on her head. According to local tradition, the wooded site of Selva at the Santuario Madonna della Stella is associated with a Marian apparition at the end of May 1536. The Santuario, situated on a hillside, offers views of Brescia and the lower plain, Valle Trompia, Valle Camonica and Franciacorta. The building fabric, the church forecourt and the small square in front of the Santuario Madonna della Stella belong to San Vigilio, a hamlet of Concesio.

Trails with Different Experiences and Time Requirements

The trails around San Vigilio also have different focal points. The ancient Via Valeriana runs past the site of San Velgio and continued onwards towards the middle and upper Valle Trompia. The Sentiero 3V can be reached from San Vigilio via the ascent to Camaldoli and continues through Quarone di Sotto, Quarone di Sopra, Civine and Piazzole.

A short hike from San Vigilio also follows the Sentiero degli Alpini to the hillside church of San Velgio, passing Stations of the Cross along the way. The hike from San Vigilio di Concesio to Monte Cornone via the Sentiero degli Alpini covers approximately 300 metres of elevation gain, takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to walk and has difficulty rating E (hiking). This provides two different trail sections around San Vigilio for a day’s itinerary: a short church trail with Stations of the Cross and a tour to Monte Cornone requiring its own amount of time and elevation gain.
