The central arch preserves the historic entrance to Rovato’s old centre and still leads to the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and into the heart of old Rovato. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta houses paintings by Palma il Giovane, Antonio Paglia, Giovan Battista Pittoni, Angelo Inganni and Guadagnini, as well as a wooden Christ by Andrea Fantoni. The Santuario di Santo Stefano degli Appestati originally served as a deaconry supporting travellers. The Santuario di S. Stefano preserves wall paintings dating from the 14th century to the first quarter of the 16th century. Together, these sites reveal several distinct facets of sacred art and history in Rovato.

Monastery, Castle and Historical Traces

In the Convento della Santissima Annunciata, a fresco of the Annunciation and four prophets by Girolamo Romanino have been preserved in the lunettes; Romanino created the choir decoration between 1535 and 1540. The history of the monastery can be traced back to a precisely dated event: on 1 April 1449, the municipality of Rovato granted the Servite friars a plot of land on Monte Orfano for the construction of the Convento della Santissima Annunciata; in 1452, the monastery was occupied by a community of Servites. Parts of the northern and western curtain walls, as well as cylindrical towers, survive from the Castello di Rovato. These towers shaped Rovato’s depiction as a city of towers in the painting cycle featuring the “Stoning of Saint Stephen” in the apse of the church dedicated to the saint on Monte Orfano.
