Roncadelle: Culture, Water Management and Festival Traditions
Roncadelle combines historic townscapes, local traditions and the relationship between the landscape and human use. Specific themes include churches and art, water management, protected landscapes and festival culture.
Churches and Art with a Long History
The parish church of San Bernardino was built in the 15th century and expanded in the 16th, 17th and 20th centuries. The main altarpiece was created by Francesco Paglia in 1675. For culture-oriented travellers, the church combines an architectural history that developed over centuries with a precisely dated work of art. The present-day building Palazzo Guaineri is still known in Roncadelle as “il castello” (“the castle”).
The old church of Santa Giulia has been documented since 15 May 1306. It probably corresponds to the building at 52–56 Via S. Bernardino, on the corner of what is now Via Gagarin.
Water Management and Protected Landscapes
In Roncadelle, the Seriola Porcellaga was the most important irrigation network for more than five centuries. Its history goes back to 1391: at that time, Pecino Porcellaga received permission from the authorities in Brescia to build a seriola. It was intended to carry water from the Mella from what was then Cobiato, now Collebeato, to irrigate a large part of his properties west of the city. In the past, the Mella supplied fish, gravel, sand and water for irrigation. Water therefore appears as a defining part of the town’s history, not merely as a landscape feature.
The park of Roncadelle Castle is also part of the area’s landscape history. In 1960, it was placed under landscape protection because of its natural and scenic beauty. A hospitium stood at the crossing of the Mella on the main road between Brescia and Pavia. Thus, alongside churches and art, the landscape and historic local connections also come to the fore.
Local Life and Cultural Events
The Biblioteca Comunale di Roncadelle lends books for 30 days, as well as DVDs and board games for 15 days.
Local festival culture is reflected in the annual San Bernardino da Siena festival. It is celebrated on 20 May with a well-attended religious procession and is often complemented by a sagra in the town centre. Roncadellestate is one of the traditional cultural events in Roncadelle. These festival traditions give a stay a clear temporal and cultural focus.
