Niardo combines natural landscapes, religious history and a farming-shaped culture with activities that make very different kinds of holiday days possible. Almost the entire area of Niardo lies within Parco dell’Adamello. There are also mountain pastures with their associated alpine meadows, as well as churches and collections that bring the town’s history across several centuries to life.

Cultural history between MuEt and historic churches

The MuEt collection is at the heart of the local culture. It consists mainly of tools from traditional farming culture in the 19th and 20th centuries and also covers the industrial and post-industrial worlds. The collection is closely connected with the historic craft activities of the Taboni blacksmiths from Niardo, known as the Frer; their roots date back to the 19th century. This offers an insight into work, craftsmanship and changes in everyday life, without separating the farming tradition from later industrial development.

The religious buildings also give Niardo a richly layered historical character. The Chiesa di San Giorgio was built in the 15th century on an isolated hill above Niardo. Its walls are covered with valuable votive frescoes. The Parrocchiale di San Maurizio houses important paintings, including works attributed to Fiamminghino and Giovan Battista Nodari. The Chiesetta degli Angeli Custodi was built in 1640 at the request of the Recaldini family.

The Chiesetta degli Angeli Custodi is also associated with a preserved work of art: the original altarpiece depicting the Guardian Angel is kept in the parish and appears to be attributable to Fiamminghino. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe lies in the municipal area of Braone; it is entrusted to the parish of Niardo and dates from the 17th or 18th century. The religious history goes back even further: the relics of Sant’Obizio were handed over to representatives of the parish of Niardo on 24 November 1798, while the Compagnia delle Guardie d’Onore di Sant’Obizio was founded in 1923.

Hiking and cyclocross in Niardo

For active days, the Tra Niardo e Breno route offers a clearly defined hiking focus. It is rated easy, takes 4 hours and 10 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 600 m. In addition, the sixth stage of the Cammino di Carlo Magno from Breno to Grevo passes through Niardo.

Cycling is also part of the local experience. The Gir de Gnard is a recurring cyclocross competition in Niardo that has developed over the years into a classic cross-country event. In 2026, it reached its 24th edition.
