Holiday Apartment in Castenedolo: Culture, Cycle Paths and Wine Route

Castenedolo combines cultural sites with cycle paths, a religious tradition and the Strada del Vino Colli dei Longobardi. A former palazzo, sacred art, a long cycling route and the hills of the wine route give the town a variety of historical and landscape connections.

Culture among Former Churches and Works of Art

The Santa Giustina complex is the former Palazzo Archetti. A decree issued by the Italian Minister of Culture on 30 June 1993 recognized it as a cultural asset of cultural interest. The recognition from 1993 thus stands alongside the older designation as the former Palazzo Archetti.

The Sala Civica dei Disciplini is located in the former church of S. Rocco e S. Sebastiano. It was built in the first half of the 16th century. Alongside the former palazzo, this therefore adds a church building with its own architectural history and a significantly earlier timeframe. Its construction in the 16th century establishes a different timeframe from the recognition of Santa Giustina.

The painting “Il martirio di San Bartolomeo” by Francesco Hayez was completed in 1856. The following year, it was installed at the end of the apse.

The Museo di Arte Moderna Contemporanea, a museum, is also located in the area around Castenedolo. The Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, also a museum, is likewise in the surrounding area. Cultural connections thus extend from former sacred and secular buildings through painting to two museums in the vicinity.

Cycle Paths and a Circular Route for Experienced Cyclists

Access to the cycle paths within the municipality of Castenedolo is free. The connection to the cycle paths therefore remains local within the municipality, while the Colline di Re Rotari form a long circular route for experienced cyclists.

The circular route passes through Brescia, Rezzato, Castenedolo, Montirone, Poncarale and Flero. When planning a ride, the entire route through these six towns therefore matters, not just the section in Castenedolo.

The Colline di Re Rotari are associated with Rotari. Rotari is regarded as the Duke of Brescia and, from 636 to 652, as King of the Lombards and King of Italy. The name of the route thus connects the cycle path with a historical reference to Brescia and the Lombards.

Tradition and the Regional Wine Landscape

In the parish of Castenedolo, the “macchina del triduo” has been set up every year since around 1700. Approximately 1,000 candles are lit individually by volunteers. The tradition is therefore based both on the annual setup and on the participation of volunteers.

The Strada del Vino Colli dei Longobardi reaches Castenedolo and its hills. For the wine-route connection, the landscape around Castenedolo is therefore just as relevant as the town’s name itself.
