The Torre Civica: History in a Distinctive Form

The Torre Civica was built in 1492 on the orders of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, to control the territories of the Republic of Venice located beyond the Serio River. The Torre Civica has a square ground plan, is made of exposed brick, is 42 metres high and has a Guelph merlon crown. In the 19th century, it received bells and a new clock, thereby also taking on the function of a bell tower. Its architectural form, political history and later function can be considered together here. The 42-metre height and the Guelph merlon crown define the vertical silhouette of the square tower. The addition of bells and a clock in the 19th century marks a later change from its original purpose of control.

Serio Landscape and Routes for Active Days

At Mozzanica, the bed of the Serio River narrows. Small wet woodlands grow along the banks of its side channels. Nature observation along the Serio therefore involves not only the narrowed riverbed, but also the transition to vegetated banks. In addition to the narrowed riverbed, the side channels bring further bank zones with small wet woodlands into the landscape.

The Casciana Colomberone route leads through Parco del Serio to the Santuario della Madonna della Neve in the Colomberone district and is recommended for cycling. The destination in the Colomberone district gives the recommended cycling route a clear direction.

Architecture and Museums

The Chiesa di S. Stefano is a 16th-century church with a terracotta gabled façade. The terracotta façade provides a different material accent from the exposed brick of the Torre Civica. In terms of architectural forms, a gabled façade and a square tower thus stand opposite each other as different motifs. The church complements the tower with a sacred architectural form and terracotta. The gable shape defines the upper edge of the terracotta façade in the townscape.
