In Gazzaniga, impressive evidence of the marble tradition meets historic churches, old townscapes and paths leading into the hilly landscape. The Giardino Geologico della Valle Seriana lies north of the fire station, between the Valle Seriana expressway and the Gazzaniga-Cene junctions. A cycle and pedestrian path also runs through the grounds. For active days, Gazzaniga is also the starting point for CAI Trail 523, which leads through meadows, woods and hillside terrain to Monte Poieto.

Black marble as a defining theme

Quarries had been operating in Gazzaniga since the 15th century. They supplied mainly gravel and stone, including large blocks, for walls, houses and public buildings. From the beginning of the 17th century, the intensely and uniformly black stone was polished and used in churches and palaces for multicoloured inlays, including in connection with the Baroque and the Counter-Reformation. The Museo del Marmo Nero takes up this theme as an open-air exhibition in a garden next to the town hall and library, displaying large unfinished monoliths.

Churches steeped in history and art

The Oratorio di San Rocco al Lago stands on one of the three hills above Gazzaniga, at an altitude of 480 metres. The oratory was completely frescoed between 1520 and 1530, mostly by the workshop of the Marinoni family from Desenzano al Serio. In 1630, it was used as a hospital for quarantining plague victims. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta e Sant'Ippolito was built in 1457 and dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. In 1666, the church became a pilgrimage destination after the remains of the martyr Saint Hippolytus were transferred there from the catacombs of Rome.

Pilgrimage and local workshops

The Tempietto del Rovaro, as it appears today, was built in 1933 next to an older chapel dating from the 17th century. It is made entirely of dressed stone from the area's precious black marble. The former chapel at Rovaro attracted numerous pilgrims because of its miraculous crucifix. The ancient Oratorio di S. Croce also preserves art from different periods: its frescoes were created around 1520 by the Marinoni family from Desenzano al Serio, while the altar was redesigned towards the end of the 17th century using local black marble with multicoloured inlays by the local Manni workshop.

Historic Centre and Orezzo

Via Briolini is also known as Villa and is the oldest part of Gazzaniga's historic centre. The medieval layout is still visible there, with loggias, arcades and porticoes supported by stone columns. In Orezzo, you can discover farmhouses with medieval layouts as well as wooden loggias with interwoven balconies. The Oratorio della SS. Trinità in Orezzo was built in 1585; its church preserves an altar and further decorations on the side doors from the Manni school, as well as precious old paintings.

Hills, memorial sites and travel planning

Colle del Castello is home to a circular, terraced complex with a small church and an old tower. The tower and the structure of the old oratory are still preserved there; apparently, it is no longer called S. Carlo del Castello. The “Briolini” Mausoleum has a slender neo-Gothic design by the architect Pandini.
