Branzi is a mountain village with distinctive natural and cultural features. The La Borleggia waterfall is already visible from the village and can be reached by a short path leading to its base. In the hamlet of Cagnoli is the Chiesa di San Sebastiano, while in Branzi’s historic centre, in the Carbunì area, stands the restored Ponte romano, which is still in use. When choosing your holiday apartment in Branzi, these different destinations can help you decide whether to focus your holiday days on nature, local history or activity.

For longer days in the mountains, the route Gli alpeggi dei Laghi Gemelli starts from the hamlet of Cagnoli and follows trail marker 212 towards Lago delle Casere. The route ends at the Rifugio CAI Laghi Gemelli; from Cagnoli, the walk takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Another trail option is the route Contrade Branzi: it leads from San Rocco along CAI trail 117 towards the hamlet of Belfiore and then reaches the hamlet of Cornello. This is considered a natural balcony with views of the Branzi waterfall and the entire village. The different routes and the duration of the longer walk make it easier for you to plan days of varying lengths.

In the same hamlet of Cagnoli, on the outskirts of Branzi, there are three homologated cross-country ski trails covering a total distance of 7 km. One trail is of intermediate difficulty and two are difficult; the loops are 3.5 km and 5 km long. If you would like to plan your days according to different levels of challenge, the trail lengths and difficulty ratings provide a clear guide for choosing your activities.

Village history and insights into traditional work

The buildings in the village also give Branzi a distinctive historical character. The Chiesa di San Pantaleone was built in 1690. The Chiesa di San Sebastiano in Cagnoli is dated to the 15th–16th century; the year 1575 and the 17th century are both given for its completion. At the Museo delle cave “Le piodere” di Branzi, a photo exhibition presents the work of the “pioder”. It is accompanied by the historical short film “La pietra nera” about the quarries, historical tools and a reconstruction of working conditions at the time. In this way, local history can be traced not only through churches and a bridge, but also through the former work involving stone.

Branzi between cheese-making tradition and regional cuisine

The Branzi cheese is particularly closely connected with the local history. Its traditional production originated in Branzi. The cheese is made from full-fat raw cow’s milk from cows that belong to the Bruna Alpina breed to a proportion of at least 90%. It is a semi-matured hard cheese and usually matures for more than 60 days. It is used in many dishes of traditional Bergamasque cuisine. Historically, Branzi was also an important centre for the exchange of milk and cheese. At the end of the alpine pasture season, such trade took place during the Fiera di San Matteo. For you, this combines a culinary theme with the trails, churches and evidence of traditional work that shape the character of the village.
