Historical traces along the Percorso dei Boattieri

The Percorso dei Boattieri also combines nature and history. In Labico, it crosses the Valle Travicella and forms part of a route through three valleys. Within the municipal area, the trail runs level past fields shaded by hazelnut and walnut trees. At the beginning of the Labico section lies the Fontana di Sassi Grossi, with a tunnel behind it carved into the tuff stone to supply water. The Percorso dei Boattieri has existed since at least 1500; individual features suggest that it was already in use in the Middle Ages.

Further historical points of interest can be found in the Arnari complex, whose structures are carved entirely into tuff stone, and near Labico: there lies the large Roman cistern Grotta Mammea. Both subjects add evidence of older building and water culture to the trails.

Traditions and regional specialities

Local tradition is reflected in the Festa di San Rocco. It is celebrated every year with several initiatives that begin before 16 August, the feast day, and include, among other things, gatherings and a solemn procession through the streets of Labico. The Piselli di Labico – Roncolette Labicane – also form part of the local profile: they are an old traditional product, harvested in stages in June.
