Circello: Discover the Castle, Churches and Archaeology
Accommodation in Circello
Circello combines a striking landscape with an unusually rich history. The Castello di Circello stands on a rocky opposite slope and dominates the valleys of the Torti and Tammarecchia streams. There are also churches, a monastery complex and the Area Archeologica di Macchia. Those planning a trip with historical discoveries and impressive townscapes will find several themes here that can be given different emphasis depending on their interests.
The Castello di Circello above the valleys
The castle is the defining focal point for anyone interested in medieval buildings and the history of fortified places. In Norman times, the Castello di Circello consisted of a curtain wall with a round tower serving as a keep. Its history remained visible even during times of war: during the battle fought on 3 June 1496, the complex withstood attacks by French, Swiss and German troops against the Aragonese army led by Giovanni Sforza.
When planning your trip, you can choose the Castello as a historical focus and consciously take its setting into account. The rocky opposite slope and the two aforementioned stream valleys give the building a distinct geographical character, without implying any particular accessibility or a set circular route.
Archaeological traces near Macchia
Another focus is the Area Archeologica di Macchia. An ancient city is being excavated there, regarded as the former capital of the Liguri Bebiani, who were deported there in 181 BC. This site offers a different approach to the past than the castle: instead of medieval defensive architecture, the focus is on the history of the ancient settlement. If you would like to combine different historical periods on a family trip, the archaeological excavation can be considered as a separate theme alongside the churches and the Castello.
Churches with distinctive details
The Chiesa di San Nicola has a single-nave body. It also contains a stone altar and several low-relief sculptures. These details make the church particularly interesting for travellers who, when visiting a town, pay attention not only to large architectural structures but also to the interior and its furnishings.
The first historical records of the Chiesa di San Rocco date from the first half of the 16th century. One of the church's bells bears the year 1518. In addition, the exterior walls feature masonry made from local stone. San Rocco thus offers several specific points of reference through which the history of the town can be read.
Monastic history and historical orientation
The church attached to the Convento San Francesco is dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli. In October 1651, the Convento San Francesco was able to accommodate twelve monks. The old monastery was destroyed by the 1962 earthquake and subsequently rebuilt with state funding. Another historical reference leads back to 1617: during a public parliament, Duca Di Somma declared his intention on 12 June to establish a monastery of the Reformed Franciscans in Circello.
The Torre di Sant'Angelo is also part of the historic skyline. It is the bell tower of the former church of San Michele Arcangelo in Circello, which no longer exists. Those who value cultural themes when choosing accommodation can therefore assess Circello according to their preferred travel focus: castles and military history, ancient archaeology, ecclesiastical art or monastic history.
