Kaulon and the archaeology of Punta Stilo

A central attraction is the Archaeological Park of Monasterace Marina on the Punta Stilo promontory. It is located on the site of the colonial centre of Kaulon, founded by Achaean Crotoniates. The monumental remains include a Doric peripteral temple made of sandstone, dated to 470–460 BC. This combination of landscape and ancient architecture already gives your stay a clear cultural focus.

It is also worth exploring the Archaeological Museum of Monasterace Marina. The inscribed bronze tablet known as the “Tabula Cauloniensis” is on display there. It is dedicated to Zeus, was written in the Achaean alphabet and is also dated to 470–460 BC. A museum tour presents the settlement of Kaulon, its sacred areas and the necropolises. This makes it possible to connect individual finds with the broader context of the ancient city.

Special details also make the archaeological exploration accessible to curious younger travellers. The so-called Casa del Drago originally had a mosaic at the threshold of a banquet room; today, this mosaic is on display in the museum. The park also contains a large underwater archaeological area with more than 200 artefacts. The museum preserves finds recovered during excavations and underwater salvage operations in the surrounding area. The thermal baths known as the “Sala dei Draghi e dei Delfini” cover around 30 square metres and feature an extremely complex floor mosaic dating from between the end of the 4th century and the first decades of the 3rd century BC.

Beaches, promenade and lively traditions

For quieter hours, the beaches of Monasterace Marina are available for relaxing and swimming. The seafront promenade adds a place for walks and a different perspective on the coastal character of the town. Depending on your preferred pace of travel, you can therefore combine cultural impressions with days of swimming and time on the promenade, without limiting your holiday to just one activity.

The local festivals also give Monasterace Marina its own distinctive character. The festival of Madonna di Porto Salvo takes place on the last Sunday in June. It honours the Madonna as the patron saint of fishermen and the community. The festival includes a procession on the sea, during which a wooden statue of the Madonna is carried. If you plan your trip for this date, you will experience a religious tradition closely connected with life by the water.

A longer procession experience in the municipal area

Another tradition is U Territoriu, a procession held every three years in honour of Sant’Andrea Avellino, the patron saint of Monasterace. The procession follows a route of around 20 kilometres through the entire municipal area of Monasterace. Halfway along the route, it stops at the Chiesa di San Giuseppe Lavoratore in Monasterace Marina. The approximate route length is important for personal day planning and clearly distinguishes this experience from a short festival visit or a walk along the seafront promenade.

The right accommodation for your travel plans

When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide on the focus of your trip. For a culture-oriented itinerary, the Archaeological Park, the museum and the ancient finds take centre stage. If swimming and relaxing days are more important, the beaches and seafront promenade provide the right thematic setting. If you are travelling for a festival, you should consider the relevant date and, for U Territoriu, the approximately 20-kilometre procession route as well. Accommodation in Monasterace Marina provides a starting point for your personal combination of history, tradition and relaxation.
