Archaeological finds confirm that the portus of San Giorgio served as a landing place from Roman times and beyond the Middle Ages. The rock settlement of San Giorgio had a church above ground. In terms of style and building materials, it corresponds to the type of rural pre-Romanesque churches found in Apulia. A more recent chapter in the town's history is marked by the Villaggio Turistico San Giorgio, which was inaugurated in 1957. Five trulli were built on the grounds of International Camping San Giorgio to show visitors a distinctive regional building tradition.

The Dipartimento di Zoologia museum is located in the vicinity of San Giorgio. Celebrations in Early May

During the traditional celebrations in Bari in early May, a historical costume procession begins in San Giorgio. The image of the holy bishop of Myra is placed on a boat and taken to the Nazario Sauro waterfront promenade. The route leads from its starting point in San Giorgio to the waterfront promenade.
