Casamassima’s Medieval Old Town

In Casamassima’s medieval Borgo, winding streets run around courtyards; the dead-end alleys are called Chiassi. In the historic centre, the Torre dell’Orologio overlooks the main square. The Castello, an ancient noble palace, is also located there. Finding your way around the historic centre therefore follows both the winding paths of the Borgo and the individual historic buildings.

Churches, Art and History in Casamassima

The Chiesa del Santo Rosario was built in 1535 in honour of Saints Rocco and Sebastiano. Its two-storey façade is clad in stone. The Chiesa Santa Croce, also known as the Chiesa Madre, is located in the Borgo Antico. The Romanesque church is dated to 1321 and houses a 16th-century Madonna and Child attributed to Stefano da Putignano. During restoration work at the Chiesa Santa Croce, an ancient burial ground was discovered in 1996–97.

The Complesso delle Monacelle houses the Museo Civico. In the Palazzo Monacelle, the Biblioteca Comunale has around 10,000 volumes. The Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie was built in 1575 and extended in 1837. Its crypt features arches and columns, a majolica floor and colourful geometric decorations. The Chiesa del Purgatorio is a remarkable building in the historic centre of Casamassima.

Traditions and Places of Remembrance

Since 2016, the Pentolaccia Casamassimese has been associated with the Carnevali Storici d’Italia. As a traditional carnival event, it includes allegorical floats, performances by masked groups and the opening of the Pentolaccia.

The Cimitero Polacco Korpusu is one of four Polish cemeteries in Italy. It contains 431 stone graves arranged in orderly rows typical of Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, with Christian, Orthodox, Muslim and Jewish grave markers. Every year on 2 November, a memorial ceremony is held at the Cimitero Polacco Korpusu for the Polish soldiers who fell in the Second World War.

Marcedde and Casamassima’s Agriculture

The Marcedde woodland is a ten-hectare Mediterranean maquis along the Lama San Giorgio. It consists mainly of downy oaks and turkey oaks. Agriculture in the Casamassima area consists mainly of olive groves, almond groves, cherry orchards and vineyards for table grapes.
