Adelfia brings together two historic centres that emerged a short distance from each other around the year 1000, along with a succession of festivals, processions and historic buildings. The town is located near the lower slopes of the central Murge. Historical traces between Montrone and Canneto

In the oldest part of Montrone stands the Chiesa Madre San Nicola, an 18th-century church. Construction began around 1711 and lasted approximately 15 years. On 23 September 1726, the church was blessed by Giovanni Battista Venovelli from Matera.

The Torre Normanna is located in the historic centre of the Canneto district. It was built between 1147 and 1153 at the behest of the feudal lord Alfonso Balbiano and served defensive purposes over the centuries. The original residential tower of Casina Don Cataldo, the Castello dei Fascina, was built between 1390 and 1396 by Nicolò Dottula, one of the first feudal lords of Montrone.

Between 1652 and 1696, Casina Don Cataldo, the Castello dei Fascina, was transformed from a fortified castle house into an aristocratic residence thanks to Marchese Luigi Biachi-Dottula.

Festivals, processions and regional specialities

In Adelfia-Montrone, the Festa Patronale di San Trifone takes place every year from 1 November to 11 November. The Festa includes a procession through Adelfia-Montrone and, in the early afternoon, a fireworks competition lasting around three hours. During these festive days, specially set-up street stalls offer lamb chops known as "costatine scottadito", grilled offal known as "'nghimmiredde", celery stalks, slices of provolone and local wine.

On Shrove Tuesday, the Amici di Adelfia group performs a theatrical representation of the Passion of Christ along the town’s streets. Around 150 actors and extras, as well as numerous costume, sound and lighting professionals, are involved. It is based on an adaptation of a text by don Peppino Diana.

The Festa di Maria SS. della Pietà takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. On the following Monday, a procession carries the statue to the Cappella della Pietà and then back to the Chiesa Madre. The Cappella della Pietà is also known as Madonella and was built by Giuseppe Maria Capecizurla in fulfilment of a vow. In the Canneto district, the Festa Patronale di San Vittoriano is a local tradition honouring the patron saint San Vittoriano.
