Arvier between Vineyards and Valgrisenche

Arvier lies at the entrance to Valgrisenche. Terraced vineyards cover the sunniest slopes. The red wine Enfer d’Arvier is produced in Arvier and was among the first wines in the Aosta Valley to receive DOC status.

Parish Church, Leverogne and Local History

The present parish church of Arvier was built between 1680 and 1701. Its bell tower has a four-sided pyramidal spire with four smaller pinnacles; this design is almost unique in the Aosta Valley. For those interested in culture, the documented construction history is complemented by a distinctive detail of the tower’s architecture.

In the nearby hamlet of Leverogne are the frescoes of the pilgrims’ hospice founded in 1368. The Les Balmes area in Leverogne also contains fluvioglacial potholes and an archaeological remnant of a Roman road. The pilgrims’ hospice, founded in 1368, is therefore documented as predating Arvier’s present parish church.

Traditions and Planaval

The event “Levrogne d'eun cou” is dedicated to reviving the past and traditions of Leverogne. The market offers crafts and agricultural food products from the Aosta Valley, along with tastings of regional specialities. In this way, regional food culture has its own place in Leverogne alongside the frescoes and historical traces.

The Casa-forte dei Signori d’Avise was built in Planaval in 1312. Every two years, it also hosts the Tour du Ruitor ski mountaineering race for teams of two. The year 1312 is considerably earlier than the construction period of Arvier’s present parish church.

Sanctuary and Lago Lolair

The Notre-Dame de Rochefort sanctuary is backed by the Château Blanc Glacier; from there, the profile of Mont Blanc can be seen. The glacier and mountain profile provide the sanctuary with a clearly Alpine visual backdrop.

The Lago Lolair nature reserve contains a lake fed by three springs. An extensive reed bed and rounded, smoothly polished rock formations of glacial origin surround the body of water. Walking Trails and the Camino Balteo

Two starting points are specifically assigned for planning routes: the walking trail to Lago Lolair begins in the village of La Ravoire, while the cylindrical tower of Castello di Montmayeur can be reached on foot from the hamlet of Grand Haury. Arvier is also located on the Camino Balteo hiking route. Thus, access to the lake, the walk to the tower and the longer hiking route each differ in their respective form of travel.

Ru Eausourde: Water, Art and Observation

The Ru Eausourde is a canal system that brings water from the mountain to farmers. Along the Ru Eausourde, artworks by local schoolchildren depicting native flora and fauna are displayed. Butterflies and birds can be observed along the way. The watercourse, the students’ artworks and the wildlife observations remain directly connected to the course of the canal.

Arvier can be reached from Aosta via the “Aosta-Courmayeur” bus route. For travel by bus, Aosta is the specific starting point.
