In Miltown Malbay, traditional Irish music shapes the visitor experience: you can encounter it during an annual festival week, at a visitor centre and at sessions in the pubs. At the same time, cycling and walking routes lead into the West Clare countryside, while nearby White Strand offers a different focus. When choosing your holiday rental, consider whether you would like to include the town’s musical traditions, time outdoors on the routes or time at the beach in your trip.

Music and Stories from West Clare

Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy is held each July as a week-long event celebrating traditional Irish music, song and dance. During the festival week, the streets of Miltown Malbay become a venue for music and dancing. Students, musicians and visitors come from across Ireland and beyond to take part. In the town centre, a life-size bronze statue commemorates Willie Clancy and his contribution to Irish music.

The West Clare Music Makers’ Visitor Centre in Miltown Malbay offers an insight into these traditions. It tells the story of music, song and dance, and explains the origins of the instruments used and the people who played them. The Musicmakers of West Clare features a specially produced 14-minute video of musicians playing various instruments, including the uilleann pipes. Another video, lasting eight minutes, covers the history and origins of traditional Irish instruments; it is available in English, Irish and French. The centre also has a unique collection of concertinas from various makers and places of origin.

Music also features outside the festival week: traditional Irish music sessions take place in Miltown Malbay’s pubs throughout the year. Friel’s Pub is a long-established Irish music pub that hosts these sessions. Concertina Cruinniú adds to the town’s musical life as an annual community festival attended by leading concertina players from Ireland. Those interested in the stories behind local places can also follow the Miltown Malbay Heritage QR Code Trail, which shares stories about the town’s landmarks, notable people and events with visitors and residents.

Cycling and Walking Routes, the Beach and Town Life

There are different routes for an active outing. A circular cycling route follows country roads and narrow back roads from Miltown Malbay to Ennistymon and back. A combined cycling and walking route starts at the local church and goes around Drumbaun and hillside Lough Keagh. From there, you can enjoy views of the West Clare countryside and coast. These routes offer different ways to experience the area; choose the one that best suits your interest in cycling or combining cycling and walking.

Nearby White Strand Miltown Malbay is a small, rocky beach where you can walk along the headland. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status for quality. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding lessons and rentals are also available at nearby White Strand. You can therefore combine your stay with a beach walk or, if you are interested, activities on the water.

There are also specific places to discover in town: traditional shopfronts house a range of artisan foods and crafts. Flag Road passes the former home of Willie Clancy. Canada Cross is a place in Miltown Malbay associated with courage in local stories. Nearby, the Rineen Memorial marks the site of a 1920 ambush by the Mid-Clare IRA Brigade against the Royal Irish Constabulary. Miltown Malbay is also considered a stop along the Wild Atlantic Way.

If you would also like to work during your trip, Miltown Malbay is home to a DigiClare centre, where visitors can work flexibly and remotely. This means you can plan your trip around a range of interests: music and local stories, routes through West Clare, the nearby beach or a working stay. Choose your holiday rental to suit whichever of these aspects of the town matters most to you.
