Swords: River Park and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Swords
Swords offers a reason to combine a stay amid river scenery and history: Ward River Valley Regional Park stretches south of the town, while the Round Tower and Castle reveal different chapters of its past. There is also a museum and a service for tracing family roots. Which of these aspects interests you most can help you decide whether Swords suits your travel plans as a holiday destination.
Ward River Valley Regional Park on the Ward River
Ward River Valley Regional Park is an 89-hectare linear park on the banks of the Ward River, south of Swords. It stretches between Swords town centre and Knocksedan Bridge. Its location along the river gives the park its distinctive shape: it is described as an elongated waterside landscape, rather than a single attraction with one main focal point.
The park has viewpoints, picnic areas and sports pitches. This offers several options: you can focus on the views, plan a break at a picnic area or make use of the sports pitches. This mix is a useful point to consider when choosing where to stay if you want to include nature and physical activity in your travel plans. Buses 33, 41, 41b and 41c run from Lower Abbey Street in Dublin to Swords Main Street; the park is accessible by these buses.
The Round Tower and Castle: two historic buildings
Swords Round Tower dates from the 9th century and marks the site of an ancient monastery founded by St. Colmcille in 560 AD. The Round Tower complex also includes a 14th-century bell tower. The buildings from these different centuries can be considered together without conflating them as a single structure from one period.
Swords Castle has its own architectural character. It is a National Monument and is one of the best-preserved examples of an archiepiscopal palace in Ireland. The complex is enclosed by a boundary wall approximately 260 metres long and is roughly pentagonal in shape. These approximate measurements and the ground plan give a concrete sense of the scale of the site. Visits are scheduled from Tuesday to Saturday; guided tours are available on request.
Museum and family history research
The Swords Historical Society Museum and Heritage Centre is located in the Carnegie Library on North Street in Swords. Opening hours are listed as weekdays from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. If you plan to visit the museum, you can take these hours into account when organising your day. For a different kind of discovery, Fingal Genealogy supports people in tracing their family roots with the help of researchers. The offerings thus cover not only architectural and local history but also a personal approach to family history.
