Roundstone brings together village history, harbor life and crafts with trails through the coastal landscape. The harbor and St. Mary’s Church tell the story of the village’s development; nearby trails and beaches offer different perspectives. When searching for a holiday rental, it is therefore worth considering whether you mainly want to experience village culture or focus on trails and scenery.

Coastal Landscapes and Trails

The tombolo at Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Beach is about two miles from Roundstone, on the road to Clifden. Dog’s Bay has a horseshoe-shaped white sand beach, with sand made entirely of shell fragments. Its shape and materials make the beach a striking natural feature in the surrounding area.

The route up Errisbeg Hill starts in Roundstone village. From the summit, visibility permitting, views extend across the coast and towards Gurteen Beach and Dog’s Bay. The Ervallagh Trail offers a different perspective: it follows the shoreline and reaches a small harbor after about 30 minutes. Weather and shoreline conditions can affect the route. While the summit view defines the Errisbeg route, the Ervallagh Trail follows the shore.

Village History and Encounters

The harbor is almost in the center of Roundstone and was established in the mid-1820s by Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo. St. Mary’s Church was built in the 19th century and became a focal point for the growing community of fishermen, farmers and craftspeople. At the harbor, you can watch the activity and talk with local fishermen. The harbor and church thus offer different ways to connect with the village’s history.

The Roundstone Fairy Trail is a self-guided loop of about 2.2 km through the village and takes 32 minutes. It is aimed at families with children aged four to ten, as well as adult visitors. Children’s fairy tales are combined with local information for adults. In 2026, the seasonal period ran from March 21 to September 21.

Crafts and Local Offerings

The annual Arts Week features a music trail, street performers and visual art exhibitions. Check the dates and program for your travel year. The traditional craft center offers pottery, musical instruments, silver, Celtic jewelry and handmade stoneware. Bodhráns are sold at the Roundstone Music and Craft Shop and can be hand-painted with Celtic patterns or a family crest. The shop is housed within the walls of a former Franciscan monastery and offers coffee and an outdoor picnic area beside the monastery bell tower, right by the water. The range at individual businesses may change; check access to the coffee service and picnic area before visiting.

Market and Travel Planning

The Roundstone Country Market is held on Sundays in summer from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the tennis court beside Roundstone Hall. Items on offer include freshly caught fish, organically grown fruit and vegetables, homemade cheeses, locally baked bread and pastries, and handmade goods. There are also crêpes, fudge, coffee and Irish ice cream; the selection may vary from one market day to another. Check the dates before visiting.

Bus Éireann route 421 runs between Galway and Westport along the coast, passing through Roundstone. Check the timetable for your travel dates before planning to use this route for your journey. When searching for a holiday rental, it helps to consider what you want to focus on: should the harbor, church and crafts shape your time in the village, or would you like to set aside more time for the shoreline trail, Errisbeg and the nearby beaches? This can help the mix of village culture and scenery you want guide you to the right place to stay.
