Raufarhöfn: Arctic Henge, Harbor and Coastal Paths
Accommodation in Raufarhöfn
Raufarhöfn offers several sides to life in a seaside town: a small boat harbor, a stone church, birdlife by the pond and paths along the coast. It is also home to the Arctic Henge, a monument inspired by Norse mythology and astronomy. Whether you prefer spending time outdoors, are interested in local history or want to discover striking structures, these different highlights each give your stay its own direction.
Harbor and Local History
Raufarhafnarkirkja is a stone church dating from 1928. It stands at the northern end of town, next to the working area of the small boat harbor and at the end of the harbor where the town's first settlement was established. Here, the history of the early settlement and today's harbor surroundings meet. The church is a distinctive landmark to help you find your way around town.
The three information towers in Raufarhöfn offer insights into plant life, history and buildings. Each tower has four panels covering these topics. If you want to get to know the town beyond its individual sights, you can explore several subjects here: nature, the past and the built environment sit side by side. The panels complement what you see at the harbor and church with information on different aspects of the town.
Pond, Sea and Birdlife
Kottjörn is a pond in the heart of Raufarhöfn. Its small island is home to a variety of birdlife. At Höfðinn, meanwhile, you can go for a walk and take in the landscape and the sea. The Raufarhafnarviti lighthouse is also located there and serves as an aid to navigation. The pond, coastal landscape and lighthouse offer different ways to enjoy your stay, from watching nature to taking a walk with a sea view.
Another way to explore the surroundings on foot is the circular hiking trail from Raufarhöfn to the Ásinn Ridge. It starts at the swimming pool or the campground, follows the coast through the older part of town to the harbor quay, climbs to the Ásinn Ridge and returns to the starting point. The route links the coastline, older neighborhoods, harbor and ridge in one loop. Birdlife is often particularly diverse along the coastal section. If you are interested in birds, this part of the trail makes a good focus; the rest of the route leads from the shore up to the ridge.
Arctic Henge and Wide-Open Views
The Arctic Henge, also known as Heimskautsgerðið, is a unique monument in Raufarhöfn. Its design is inspired by Norse mythology, astronomy and the dramatic light of the Arctic. From Raufarhöfn, you can reach it by car or with a short walk. The hill offers expansive views over Raufarhöfn and the surrounding landscape and Arctic Ocean. The monument thus combines a cultural connection with views of the town, landscape and sea.
Practical Information for Your Visit
Tjaldsvæðið Raufarhöfn campground is in a quiet location by a pond and just a few minutes' walk from the town's services.
