Landscape

Tönkölös-hegy, Nagy-Som-hegy, Pálházi-hegy, and Pápavár are located in the immediate surroundings of Bakonybél.

The Podmaniczky earthworks extend for several hundred meters along a ridge between Somhegy and Barát-út. Individual sections are interrupted by deep valleys, including the Gerence Valley.

Orientation

Access to the earthworks begins at the eastern end of Somhegypuszta on a macadam road blocked by a barrier. After about 800 meters, visitors reach a junction leading to the ramparts.

History

The Podmaniczky earthwork is a double rampart with preserved ditches and raised sections. Its construction date and purpose are unknown; the site is provisionally attributed to the Late Bronze Age and may possibly be connected with the Csörsz-árok earthwork system.

On the Way

After crossing the two ramparts where the field meets the forest, visitors can walk along a neglected forest road following the course of the two ramparts. For visitors who would like to walk along the course of the ramparts, this section describes one specific option.
