Culture and History
Ajka is home to a Baroque Reformed church built in 1783. The parish church on Szent István úti in Tósokberénd was completed in the late Baroque style in 1808. The Városi Múzeum és Fotógaléria preserves the memory of the years that Borsos Miklós, Fekete István and Molnár Gábor spent in the city.
The Bányászati Múzeum in Ajka preserves a machine house, a shaft house, exhibition rooms in a forge and underground storage rooms as part of Hungary’s first open-air memorial to the history of technology. From September 2010, it was renovated and developed into a European-level interactive presentation venue dedicated to the history of technology. In addition, the mineral, rock and fossil cabinet displays well-known minerals from around the world, including ajkaite, which was named after Ajka.
The Ajka Kristály glass factory began operating in Ajka in 1878 after the Úrkút glassworks were relocated there. To this day, Ajka Kristály uses traditional mouth-blown glassmaking techniques and produces unique as well as cut and coloured glass objects.
The history of the Kriptongyár is also present in the city: the former building of the world’s first Kriptongyár in Csingervölgy opened as a Multicultural Experience Centre in April 2023. The renovated building and its surroundings provide space for contemporary international visual arts events as well as community events. In Kaszinó Park, there is also an urban-themed experience trail among the trees.
Water and Recreation
Kristályfürdő in Ajka has outdoor pools with recreational attractions, an indoor pool, a sauna and a steam bath. The seasonal leisure pool complex at Kristályfürdő comprises six heated pools, a water area of 1,700 m² and various recreational attractions. The facilities also include children’s pools, paddling pools and family-friendly services.
Nature and Cycling
Ármin-völgyi Parkerdő is Ajka’s excursion forest. The marked hiking trails there are 17.5 kilometres long in total. Sárcsi-kút is a popular excursion destination.
The municipal Ajka–Csingervölgy cycle path is 1,460 metres long and has a rest area. The Ajka–Csingervölgy cycle path project improves bicycle access to the Bányászati Múzeum and the world’s first Kriptongyár. It also connects the municipal cycle network with the cycle path on Kab-hegy.
The cycle path around Kab-hegy is approximately 40 kilometres long. Along the route there are maps and signposts as well as rest areas, including two shelters providing protection from the rain.
Geographical Location
Near Ajka, adjacent to Csinger-völgy and just a few minutes’ walk from the Bányászati Múzeum, you will find the Olvasókabin. It combines a reading room with the practical features of an overnight shelter in the forest.
