Kartal is located on the edge of the two major Hungarian geographical regions, the Alföld and Északi-középhegység. The corridor of the Kartal-völgyi-patak stream lies in an area with special landscape protection. The natural state and valuable habitats there are to be preserved.

Culture

The Szent-Erzsébet Church in Kartal stands on the town’s main square and was built in 1865 in the early eclectic style. On 19 November, it was consecrated in honor of Árpádházi Szent Erzsébet.

Kartal’s attractions include several adobe or earth-built houses that have preserved their original condition. The Kartali Mûvelõdési Ház organizes and hosts folk music, folk art and cultural heritage events, as well as holiday camps. As part of its local programs, it offers exhibitions and educational lectures for the general public. In addition, the community center provides space for art groups, civil society organizations, clubs and hobby groups that meet weekly or monthly.

History

In the early Árpád period, Kartal was an important settlement and a tribal center with a church. Several Neolithic finds indicate that Neolithic people were already making use of Kartal’s favorable natural conditions.

Connections and Routes

MÁV line 431 operates on the Budapest–Aszód–Kartal–Palotás route. The Galga 100 hiking route also passes through Kartal.
