Culture and history

The most significant attraction in Nagymágocs is Károlyi Castle, built in the late 19th century. The village is also home to a local history collection, which provides an opportunity to learn about the settlement's past and earlier times. The park is freely accessible; however, the interior of the castle building can only be viewed with permission. Nagymágocs is located 22 km from Szentes.

The 41-hectare park of Károlyi Castle is freely accessible. It contains valuable old oak trees, conifers and Baroque statues from the 18th century, as well as the fountain “Rape of the Sabine Women”, designed on the Parisian model, the “Boy with Fish” fountain and the sculpture group “The Four Seasons”. The castle and its associated buildings were constructed in 1896–1897 in an eclectic Neo-Baroque style. Despite later additions and the demolition of individual sections, they have largely been preserved in their original condition.

On the first floor there is a chapel with a black-and-white tiled marble floor, ornamental ceiling stucco and a marble altar. It was established in memory of the deceased young son of the count's family. The park also contains a small animal cemetery with the graves of the count's favourite dogs and a memorial stone for his favourite horse.

Activities

The Alföldi Kéktúra is considered Hungary's second-longest long-distance hiking trail and passes through Nagymágocs. A cycling tour with stops in Orosháza, Árpádhalom, Nagymágocs, Székkutas and Kardoskút is also designated.
