A large, flat plateau surrounded by fjords and mountains defines Narsaq and its surroundings. The 685-metre-high Qaqqarsuaq is a striking feature of the landscape. Here, sweeping views meet a mountain panorama that also shapes the choice of daily activities: you can explore the town and its history, set out for the mountains or include excursions on the water in your itinerary.

Fjords, Mountains and Vistas

From Narsaq Point (Nuugaarsuk), the unobstructed view stretches up the Tunulliarfik Fjord towards Narsarsuaq. The viewpoint draws your gaze along the fjord, while the plateau and surrounding mountains define the landscape around Narsaq. The waters around Narsaq are home to whales, seals and salmon, among other wildlife. They are part of the local natural environment, but individual wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

Traces of History in the Town and Surrounding Area

Narsaq’s colonial harbour is part of the historic town quarter. The areas around the old colonial harbour, the church, Henrik Lund’s house and Landnamsgården are designated as particularly valuable conservation areas. These places provide several tangible points of connection to the town’s history in its present-day streetscape. The original settlement of “Gammel Narsaq” is also part of the area’s history: it was located on the coast northwest of Narsaq.

The Narsaq Museum features interiors from different periods and social classes. The museum also includes a memorial house for Henrik Lund, who was a poet, priest and painter. Another historical trace is the Landnám farm, one of the oldest Norse ruins in the area. Its ground plan is still clearly visible near the town centre. The museum, memorial house and ruins each offer a different perspective: on homes and society, on remembering a notable figure, or on visible traces of settlement.

Hiking and Excursions on the Water

Popular hikes lead to the summits of Tasiigaaq and Qaqqarsuaq, the two mountains just behind Narsaq. Hiking is therefore a clear focus for days when you want to explore the surroundings on foot. Route conditions can vary, so check the latest conditions before setting out.

There are also a variety of ideas for excursions on the water. Sailing trips from Narsaq offer the chance to explore the ice; check current operators and availability before making specific plans. A short iceberg safari offers close-up views of icebergs that have calved from nearby glaciers. A half-day glacier excursion passes bird cliffs and a waterfall. Check in advance whether these excursions are currently available, too.

Fishing, May Experiences and Brewing Culture

Rivers in the mountainous hinterland around Narsaq offer fishing opportunities. A fishing licence is required; check the current rules before your trip. One possible activity in May combines fishing with local knowledge of the season: locals head to a particular river to catch the first Arctic char of the season, and visitors can join them. Check access and make arrangements locally in advance.

An unusual detail of Greenlandic brewing culture is the water source used by the small Qajaq brewery: it gets some of its water from ancient, pristine icebergs. This distinctive feature adds a glimpse of local production to the themes of landscape and history, without requiring a particular visit itinerary.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Match Your Travel Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Narsaq, you can start by considering what you want to focus on during your trip: historic places and the museum, hikes to Tasiigaaq and Qaqqarsuaq, or a sailing trip to explore the ice. These interests lead to different daily itineraries; the hikes and tours mentioned also vary in their destinations and, in the case of the glacier excursion, their duration. For specific hikes, current route conditions matter; for excursions on the water, check current availability.
