Vlachomandra: History, Mills and River Routes
Accommodation in Vlachomandra
Vlachomandra reveals itself through several layers of history: its name, former settlements and archaeological finds tell the story of its past, while mills and bridges bring the surrounding waterways to life. There are also activities on the Evinos and a 4×4 tour route to Trikorfo. This gives you the chance to combine cultural and historical discoveries with active excursions as you plan your trip.
Place Name, Former Settlements and Finds
The name Vlachomandra means a settlement or enclosure of Vlach shepherds. Historically, Vlachomandra was located in Paliochori, northwest of the present-day village, and consisted of two settlements; one was called Karnochori or Karvounochori. Vessels, oil lamps, funerary steles and two inscriptions have been found in the Vlachomandra area. These offer visitors interested in cultural history several perspectives on the past: through the place name, the history of earlier settlements and archaeological finds.
Mills and Waterways
Four water-powered mills once operated in the Vlachomandra area. The historic Paliomylos was located at the confluence of the Hochlastis and Rodia streams, which form the Amarau stream. The Ekklisias o Mylos mill was also on the Amarau. Near Chani Bania, at the Voidofaena site, stood the mill of Kostas Chr. Mitsopoulos; the historic mill of Thanasis K. Petsinis was at the Zaheika site. The confluence is the focal point at Paliomylos, while the other named sites reveal further connections between the mills, streams and local settlements. Water-powered mills used the flow of water as their source of power.
Bridges in the Surrounding Area
The nearby Bania Bridge is a Bailey bridge. It was rebuilt in 1948 and connects Nafpaktia with Trichonida. The hamlet of Chani Bania lies by this bridge on the left bank of the Evinos, as seen from the river’s source. Sphikaika lies northwest of Vlachomandra and southwest of Gefyra Bania. Along the Nafpaktos–Thermo road, nine nearby stone, single-arch bridges cross the Evinos tributary Voidofaena and its winter streams. They were built in 1889–1890 during the Trikoupis era. Here, you can see two distinct types of bridges: the Bailey bridge, rebuilt in 1948, and a group of stone single-arch bridges dating from the late 19th century.
River Activities and Tour Planning
A rafting and kayaking route on the Evinos runs from Chani Bania via Vlachomandra towards Poros in the Municipality of Nafpaktos. A 4×4 tour route leads from Vlachomandra to Trikorfo. The routes appeal to different interests: water sports on the river and, on the other hand, an off-road vehicle tour. Check current offers and route conditions before making specific plans. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether you would prefer to focus your stay on the area’s historic connections or on one of the tours mentioned.
