Pýrra combines hiking trails with unusual natural features and a layered historical heritage. Hiking trail 310 starts at the village square and leads downhill towards the river; Kazania Cave is home to an underground waterfall. Other points of interest include the Church of Saint Nicholas, the Monastery of Prophet Elias and Saint Modestos, a stone bridge and the Gintouri Fountain. Festival traditions are also among the themes that shape the village.

Hiking Trails and Natural Features

Numerous hiking routes start from Pýrra. Hiking trail 310 offers a specific point of reference: it starts at the village square and leads downhill towards the river. The variety of routes and this individually named trail complement one another. If you are interested in hiking, you can include trail 310 as a specific starting point in your travel plans.

Kazania Cave adds a different natural feature. Its underground waterfall makes it a distinct natural attraction alongside the hiking routes. In Pýrra, a trail with a clear direction and an unusual feature underground therefore offer different ways to explore the landscape.

Church, Monastery and Stone Heritage

The Church of Saint Nicholas is single-nave and has a stone-slab roof. “Single-nave” means that the church interior consists of a single nave. Inside are a few weathered frescoes dating from the late 18th to the early 19th century. The building’s design, roof and surviving wall paintings offer different points of interest if you are interested in the architecture and history of the village.

The Monastery of Prophet Elias and Saint Modestos lies northeast of Pýrra. Only its katholikon and a two-storey building on the south side remain. The building formerly housed the archontariki on the first floor and the abbot’s quarters on the second floor. The monastic cells date to 1864. The surviving details therefore relate both to the building’s former uses and to a specific construction date.

Historical landmarks can also be found outside the religious buildings. The stone bridge at the southern entrance to Pýrra is designated a monument. The stone Gintouri Fountain dates from 1757 and is considered a monument of folk culture. The bridge and fountain complement the history of the church and monastery with two further structures, each classified differently.

Festivals and Travel Plans

The monastery is associated with the Feast of Saint Modestos on 18 December. Saint Modestos is considered the patron saint of animals. At a past celebration, numerous livestock farmers gathered at the campsite where the monastery is located and celebrated him there for the third time. The customary vespers service was held. Agia Paraskevi is associated with a three-day festival that begins on 26 July at the church of the same name. On the first day, a church service and a blessing of the bread take place, followed by celebrations in the village square. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the current dates in advance.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Pýrra, you can first consider whether hiking and natural features or architectural history and festival traditions are the main focus of your trip. The village offers specific points of interest for both, helping you decide how to shape your travel plans.
