Glossa combines a distinctive townscape with cultural connections and a clearly named destination for a day out: Route 12 leads to Gourouni Lighthouse and back. Two-storey houses, traditional costumes and the history of nearby Loutraki give the town further dimensions. You can plan your trip according to whether you mainly want to discover architecture and culture or also include a hiking route.

Townscape, everyday life and cultural connections

Glossa’s two-storey houses, with their distinctive tiled roofs and wooden balconies, are characteristic of the traditional Macedonian style. The combination of these architectural features makes the town’s architecture an easily recognisable landmark. Anyone interested in building styles can get a close look here at the traditional design of the houses.

The Folklore Museum of Glossa displays furniture, everyday objects and a collection of authentic traditional costumes from the island of Skopelos. Different aspects of everyday culture are represented side by side: furnishings and household items complement the exhibits on clothing. Women wearing traditional clothing known as “foustanes” can be seen in the narrow lanes; residents also maintain their customs and dialect.

The writer Alexandros Papadiamantis offers a literary perspective. The author, who was from Skiathos, mentioned Glossa in his short story “The Nostalgic” and called the town “High Village” in it. Glossa can thus be experienced not only through its houses, objects and living traditions, but also as the setting of a literary description.

The Sideris Gallery is dedicated to the work of Alexandros Sideris, a painter from Glossa who lived and worked abroad. Its focus offers a different cultural perspective from the Folklore Museum: here, the work of an individual artist connected with Glossa takes centre stage. The historic Taxiarches (Archangels) Monastery, which is abandoned, is also located near Glossa.

Route 12 to Gourouni Lighthouse

Route 12 leads from Glossa to Gourouni Lighthouse and back to Glossa. This makes it possible to include a route with a clearly named destination in your travel plans. It offers a different focus from the museum, lanes and architecture: here, the emphasis is on a hiking route, while the cultural themes centre on the town and its history. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

Loutraki: harbour and traces of history

The harbour of Loutraki is located near Glossa. It usually receives ships or hydrofoils from Skiathos, Volos or Agios Konstantinos, which then continue to the harbour of Skopelos. If this connection is important for your arrival, check the current timetable before travelling.

Selinus, one of the island’s three ancient cities, once stood on the site of present-day Loutraki. The city may have been founded by the Chalcidians in the 8th century BC. Other surviving architectural remains in Loutraki include sections of walls from the Classical period (5th–4th century BC), as well as parts of a building from the same period.

Remains of Roman baths lie southeast of Loutraki, and present-day Loutraki takes its name from them. Near Loutraki Beach stands the church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of sailors. It was built on the foundations of a Byzantine church dating to the 7th century. Together with Selinus and the surviving sections of walls and buildings, these local landmarks reveal several historical layers in the area.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment, Glossa may be the right location if you want to focus on the townscape, the Folklore Museum or the starting point of Route 12. Loutraki offers a different point of reference: it is home to the harbour and the historical remains described above. When considering specific listings, check the stated location to make sure it suits your planned activities. If the harbour connection is part of your arrival, include the current timetable in your plans as well.
