Discover Karditsa: Park, Market and Art
Accommodation in Karditsa
Karditsa reveals itself in many different ways: at Pausilipo Park, greenery meets public art, while the market hall, art gallery and Archaeological Museum each offer their own insights into the city’s architecture and culture. You can plan your trip around experiences in the city while also making time to spend outdoors.
Green space and public art
Pausilipo Park has a playground where children can play and explore nature. Peacocks roam freely around the park, adding a special touch to the experience of nature there. On the square next to the park stands the sculpture “My Mother” by Christos Kapralos. The Greek Parliament gifted it to the Municipality of Karditsa. On the other side of the same square is a statue of Nikolaos Plastiras, known as the “Black Horseman”. The two works create different points of emphasis: a personal dedication and a portrayal of a well-known figure stand side by side.
Market hall, gallery and archaeology
The Karditsa Municipal Market Hall is considered a landmark of architecture and culture and is one of the city’s distinctive places. The Karditsa Municipal Art Gallery in the centre offers a different way to engage with art. Its permanent exhibition is divided into three sections: the Apostolos Karkas collection, with a group exhibition of contemporary Greek artists; a room dedicated to the artistic development of Dimitris Yoldasis; and a room featuring works by artists from Karditsa. This brings together contemporary Greek perspectives, the development of an individual artist and works from the city.
The gallery also organises temporary exhibitions featuring parts of its collection and works by contemporary artists, as well as educational activities. At the Karditsa Archaeological Museum, the timeline stretches from prehistoric finds—including those from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods—to Late Antiquity, including the Hellenistic period. Those interested in art and history will find a range of subjects, from artistic practice and development to evidence from widely separated eras.
A horse-riding destination outside the city
Nearby Philoneikos, three kilometres outside Karditsa, offers horse-riding activities for different interests. These include riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders, as well as a riding academy with an experienced trainer and a European curriculum. Guided pony rides and horseback rides take place in an enclosed area or in nature. Therapeutic riding for people with disabilities is also available, provided by a specialised speech therapist. If horse riding is part of your travel plans, you can include this destination as a separate part of your itinerary alongside the places in Karditsa.
Choose accommodation to match your plans
When looking for a holiday apartment in Karditsa, consider which aspects of the city you want to shape your stay: the park with its playground and free-roaming peacocks, the public art on the square, or the themes explored by the gallery and museum. These interests offer a practical starting point for choosing your destination. If you also plan to visit Philoneikos, bear in mind that the horse-riding activities are outside the city.
