At the centre of the modern town stands the Church of the Annunciation; on the island of Tinos, hiking trails lead through villages, along the coast and to old quarries. The town’s history and the island’s natural environment offer two different starting points for planning your holiday. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on the town’s cultural sites or on the island’s varied attractions.

Church History and Culture in Tinos

The Church of the Annunciation was built above the Church of the Finding, following plans by Efstratios Kalonaris “Smyrnaios”, an architect from Tinos. It has been a protected historic monument since 1962. The history of the Evangelistria complex is also tied to a specific place and time: the complex was built around the spot where the icon of Megalochari was found in January 1823. This was preceded by a vision experienced by Pelagia, a 70-year-old nun from Kechrovouni Monastery.

The feast days of the Church of the Annunciation fall on 30 January, 25 March, 23 July and 15 August. Spread throughout the year, these feast days provide a point of reference for travellers interested in Tinos’s religious history. The Virtual Museum of Tinos in Chora represents a broad cultural programme of lectures, cultural trails, exhibitions, music events and educational programmes.

On the Island of Tinos: Marble, Museums and Landscape

Marble craftsmanship is a defining part of the island’s cultural heritage. It was added to the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece in 2013 and to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. In Pyrgos, the Museum of Marble Crafts focuses on the technology of marble processing and on pre-industrial and proto-industrial Tinos as the most important centre of marble craftsmanship in modern Greece. Also in Pyrgos, the Yannoulis Halepas Museum is housed in the sculptor’s former home; the building is designated as a historic, listed structure.

The Archaeological Museum of Tinos preserves finds from Chora, Xompourgo and Kardiani, as well as from the Sanctuary of Poseidon in Kionia. They date from the Mycenaean era to Roman times. If you would rather explore Tinos through its natural and landscape features, the island has several designated protected areas: the Natura 2000 site GR4220019 lies on the northeastern edge and is classified as a Site of Community Importance. GR220031 is a Special Protection Area for birds, and Kolymbithra is protected as a wetland.

Hiking Trails and Local Discoveries

Tinos Trails is the island’s official hiking network, created, maintained and promoted by the Municipality of Tinos. The routes vary in their destinations and landscapes: T1 starts in Chora and passes through Xobourgo, described as the medieval capital of Tinos. T2 connects Agios Ioannis Porto with the two highest villages, Arnados and Dio Choria. The M4 loop starts in Volax and runs through the Lower Villages, past granite formations and old cultivated fields. M3 ends on the coast at Livada, where there is a small wetland habitat. Route E4 passes old quarries and offers views of green marble quarries.

T1A also connects different landscapes: from Chora, the route follows the coastal road to Kionia and then climbs towards Ktikado and Kyra-Xeni. These differences can help you explore the island according to your preferred focus—for example, village paths, the coast or traces of marble culture. Transport options on Tinos include your own or a rented vehicle, the KTEL bus network and taxis. Tinos is served by ferry connections from Piraeus and Rafina; check the timetables before your trip.

Local Products

Tinos is known for locally grown artichokes, garlic, herbs, capers and sun-dried tomatoes. Seasonal availability may vary. If local produce is part of your holiday, this selection is another factor to consider when planning your time on the island.
