Agios Romanos: Discover Apigania and Tinos
Accommodation in Agios Romanos
Agios Romanos offers a direct connection to the coast: the nearby beach of Apigania is within easy reach and can be accessed via a path. For trip planning, this connection to the area can be complemented by the themes of the island of Tinos—from marble art and archaeological collections to hiking trails, protected areas and local produce. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the beach should be your main focus or whether you would also like to plan visits to different destinations on Tinos.
A nearby beach, trails on Tinos
Apigania is the specific beach option in the vicinity of Agios Romanos. Access is via a path. On Tinos, the official Tinos Trails network offers another way to explore the island: it was created by the Municipality of Tinos, which maintains and promotes it.
The routes offer different highlights. T1A connects Chora with Kionia via the coastal road, then climbs towards Ktikado and Kyra-Xeni. The M4 circular route starts in Volax and passes through the Lower Villages, by granite formations and former cultivated fields. This allows you to compare a route with a coastal section followed by a climb with a circular route featuring villages, rock formations and former cultivated fields.
Other routes connect different parts of the island and landscapes: T1 starts in Chora and passes through Xobourgo, described as the medieval capital of Tinos. T2 connects Agios Ioannis Porto with Arnados and Dio Choria, the island’s two highest villages. M3 ends on the coast of Livada, where there is a small wetland habitat. Route E4 passes old quarries and offers views of quarries for green marble.
Marble art, museums and religious history
Tinian marble art brings together craftsmanship and an important cultural heritage theme: in 2013, it was added to the National Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece, and in 2015 to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Museum of Marble Crafts in Pyrgos on Tinos presents the technology of marble processing. Its focus is on pre-industrial and proto-industrial Tinos as the most important centre of marble art in modern Greece. The cultural recognition and the history of marble processing presented there offer two different perspectives on the subject.
The museums in Pyrgos and other locations on Tinos also have different focuses. The Yannoulis Halepas Museum is housed in the sculptor’s former home in Pyrgos; the building is designated as a historic, listed structure. The Archaeological Museum of Tinos preserves finds from Chora, Xompourgo and Kardiani, as well as from the Sanctuary of Poseidon in Kionia. They date from the Mycenaean era through to Roman times.
The shrine of the Holy Church of Panagia Evaggelistria of Tinos is one of Greece’s most important Orthodox pilgrimage sites. The church’s founding story connects its location with the miraculous discovery of the icon of the Annunciation of Mary, following a vision experienced by the nun Pelagia. The four major celebrations at the shrine include January 30, March 25, July 23 and August 15. Details of the respective programmes may vary.
Landscape, local produce and trip planning
The protected areas also provide a distinct framework for exploring Tinos. On the island’s northeastern edge is the Natura 2000 site GR4220019, classified as a Site of Community Importance. GR220031 is a Special Protection Area for birds; Kolymbithra is protected as a wetland. Together with the routes described above, these different designations and landscape features reveal further facets of the island.
Tinos is also known for locally grown artichokes, garlic, herbs, capers and sun-dried tomatoes. Their seasonal availability may vary. If local produce is important to your trip, factor this seasonal aspect into your plans.
Tinos is served by ferry connections from Piraeus and Rafina. Check the timetable for your travel dates. To get around the island, you can use your own or a rental vehicle, the KTEL bus network or taxis; services and timetables may change.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Agios Romanos, you can use your travel interests as a guide: Apigania offers a direct connection to the nearby beach, while the cultural and hiking destinations are located in different parts of Tinos. Choose the specific location of your accommodation and plan your transport around the focus you want for your stay.
