Asfendiou: Nature and History on Mount Dikaios
Accommodation in Asfendiou
Asfendiou lies on the slopes of Mount Dikaios and combines a distinctive landscape with a settlement steeped in history. The village itself and the other experiences on Kos offer different points of reference when choosing the focus of your vacation.
Landscape on Mount Dikaios
Asfendiou is surrounded by lush vegetation, olive trees, cypresses, pine trees and natural springs. This landscape shapes the character of the village: greenery and trees sit alongside the settlement’s buildings and neighborhoods, while the slopes of Mount Dikaios provide its geographical setting. If you choose your accommodation based on the character of your destination, Asfendiou is an option where the landscape itself becomes a theme of your trip.
Neighborhoods, churches and history
In 1983, the Greek Ministry of Culture declared Asfendiou a protected settlement. Its two main neighborhoods are Evangelistria, also known as Pera Geitonia, and Asomatos. Asfendiou is also home to the Orthodox domed church of Panagia Evangelistria. Together, the named neighborhoods and the church give the village a distinct cultural focus.
Nearby, but outside Asfendiou, are the ruins of the early Christian Basilica of Saint Paul. Just before the settlement is Monagri, the oldest exoklísion in the area. A wooden gate at Monagri keeps animals from going farther downhill. These details distinguish the settlement itself from the historical sites in its immediate surroundings.
Cycling, hiking and nature on Kos
Ten cycling routes are presented on Kos, covering all ability levels. The selection ranges from completely flat to mountainous and mixed routes, as well as unpaved and steep ones. For a hike, Mount Dikeos is another option: at 846 meters, it is the highest mountain on Kos, and a well-maintained, marked trail starts in Zia.
Water and nature also offer different inspirations for a trip to Kos. Facilities for water sports and water-based leisure activities are available at almost every beach; the Psalidi area offers all kinds of water sports. The Psalidi wetland is a seasonal refuge for migratory birds, with lush vegetation and designated paths for observing wildlife. For planning with local KTEL buses, note that they run from every settlement on Kos, with numerous regular services to Kos Town. If you plan to take the bus, check the timetable in advance.
Regional specialties
On Kos, visitors can sample honey at beekeeping businesses open to visitors and learn about the production process firsthand. Another regional specialty is Kos Krasotyri: a white cheese made from sheep’s or goat’s milk, protected as a PGI product, and aged in grape pomace for at least one month. The apiaries and cheese add a culinary note alongside the landscape and culture themes.
