Kasos: Hiking Trails, Island Nature and History
Accommodation in Kasos
On Kasos, hiking trails and distinctive natural environments meet traces of the island’s long history. You can explore the island on foot along a route, visit archaeological and maritime collections, or discover places with their own unique histories. The experiences you choose to focus on may also influence your choice of starting point and holiday apartment.
Hiking between Chadies and Agia Marina
Kasos Trails is the island’s official hiking and cycling network and a project of the Municipality of Kasos. One specific way to get to know Kasos on foot is the Wild Kasos route: it runs for 8.6 km from the Monastery of Agios Georgios near Chadies to Agia Marina. These two places mark the beginning and end of the route. If you plan this hike, keep both points of reference in mind rather than treating the walk as a circular route.
The Ellinokamara Cave can also be reached on foot from Agia Marina or Arvanitohori. Its history dates from the Mycenaean to the Hellenistic period: the cave served as a place of worship during that time and was used as a refuge during pirate raids. This offers a different way to explore the island’s history than visiting a collection or church. If you choose your holiday apartment based on the places you plan to explore, you can use these sites and the hiking route as distinct points of reference when planning your trip.
Island Nature and Coves
Kasos, the surrounding Kasonisia islets and cliffs, and the adjacent marine area are part of the Natura 2000 network because of the diversity of their habitat types. The area covers a total of 15,700 hectares. Kasos is also one of the Important Bird Areas: rare birds of prey are found there, and the island is a first stop for migratory birds from Africa. These natural features give the island another side beyond its historic sites and villages.
The coastlines also differ in character. Emporios is a small sandy beach beside Fri, easily reached by car or on foot. Ammoua is a small sandy cove with a beach bar and views of the sunset. Helatros is a sheltered, quiet beach with pebbles and blue-green water. Its bay in the southwest of Kasos was already used as a harbour by Minoan seafarers. If you are weighing up beach and hiking interests, these are specific, distinct aspects of the island to consider when choosing where to stay.
Villages, Churches and Collections
Kasos has five villages: Poli, Panagia, Fri, Arvanitohori and Agia Marina. Poli is the island’s oldest settlement and was built on the site of an ancient Mycenaean acropolis. Panagia is known for the interconnected churches of Exi Ekklisies, whose name means “Six Churches.” Above Bouka stands the Church of Agios Spyridon. It has four semicircular domes and a wooden iconostasis dating from 1866. The Monastery of Agios Mamas, meanwhile, has unique mosaics and wooden icon stands.
At the Archaeological Collection of Kasos, you can see exhibits spanning the period from prehistoric to early Christian times. The Maritime Museum of Kasos focuses on seafaring and shipbuilding: its exhibits include sextants, compasses, nautical instruments, ship models, watercolours and traditional shipbuilding tools. Together, the two collections offer different ways to explore the island—through archaeological finds on the one hand and maritime objects on the other.
The harbour of Bouka is used by small boats. It adds a tangible connection to the sea to the island’s historical and cultural attractions. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you would rather focus on hiking and landscapes, churches and history, or collections and maritime themes; the five villages provide the basic orientation for exploring Kasos.
You can also visit Kyra Panagia, Olympos, Kipos Afiarti, Tristomo, Fri, Lefkos, Karpathos and Arkása for more destination pages.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
Kasos Airport is connected to Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos); the journey time for this connection is stated as 1 hour and 15 minutes. When choosing a holiday apartment in Kasos, you can first weigh up the island experiences you prefer: the Wild Kasos route has its own starting and ending points, while museums, churches, villages and beaches appeal to different interests.
