Karpathos: Harbor Town, History and Beach
Accommodation in Karpathos
Karpathos, also known as Pigadia, is the capital and port of the island of Karpathos, on its southeastern side. The town combines a coastal setting with a long history of settlement, early Christian remains, an Archaeological Museum and an extensive sandy beach. Bars playing Greek and international music, as well as clubs, also shape the nightlife. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether Pigadia itself, with its local history and beach, or other island experiences will play a greater role in your holiday.
Ancient Remains in Pigadia
Pigadia was built on the site of the ancient city of Poseidios. Parts of the ancient acropolis and the Cyclopean walls have been preserved on the hill in town. These remains give the town’s history a tangible archaeological dimension: the past is not just a subject explored in museum rooms, but is also part of the history of the place where Pigadia came into being. Those interested in early settlements and ancient buildings will find a special focus for exploring the town here.
Early Christian history is also present on Karpathos. In Afoti, on the main road to Aperi, lie the ruins of Fotini, an early Christian basilica dating from the 5th to 6th century. It was built on the site of a sanctuary dedicated to the Dioscuri. The combination of the basilica and the older sanctuary makes this an interesting place for travelers curious about the island’s different religious and historical layers.
A Museum with Finds from Several Periods
The Archaeological Museum of Karpathos is located in Pigadia. Its collection includes finds from the prehistoric settlement of Pigadia, the island’s three ancient cities, and early Christian basilicas and Byzantine settlements. The range of topics therefore spans the earliest signs of settlement through to later periods. For holiday planning, the museum offers a way to complement the town’s archaeological focus with artifacts from different parts of the island.
The museum is housed in one of the three buildings of the Eparcheio. The complex was built during the Italian occupation and served as the island’s administrative headquarters. The building itself is therefore part of Pigadia’s history. The reproductions on display include a Mycenaean tomb and a temple from an early Christian basilica. A 14th-century mural comes from the ruins of the Church of the Holy Apostles. It depicts the Deesis and priests receiving communion. The different exhibits offer various ways to explore history: through architecture, religious imagery, and finds from prehistoric and ancient settlements.
Beach, Music and Island Experiences
Pigadia has an extensive sandy beach in town. Along with the port and its historical attractions, this gives the town a varied character, although the beach and culture need not be the focus of the same holiday. The nightlife includes bars playing Greek and international music, as well as large clubs and clubs with live music. These offerings are quite different from a quieter interest in ancient sites or museum visits; when planning your trip, you can decide for yourself which side of the town matters most to you.
There are other ways to shape your stay around your interests on the island of Karpathos. The Avlona–Tristomos–Vananda–Diafani route is considered particularly interesting and relatively difficult, involves swimming, and takes approximately 7.5 hours. When planning your day, take both the approximate duration and the swimming involved into account.
For nature lovers, the municipal birdwatching guide “Karpathos of birds” covers more than 200 bird species that can be observed, an ornithological map and 10+2 routes. Birdwatching and the route described above thus offer different island experiences alongside Pigadia’s history and beach. This can help you decide where to look for a suitable holiday apartment in Karpathos.
