Molaoi between the Larnaka Gorge and history
Accommodation in Molaoi
Molaoi can be understood through two interconnected themes: the Larnaka Gorge, which runs through the town, and traces of its history. Steep, densely forested slopes, rich plant life and the memory of eleven watermills give the landscape a distinct character. Paliopyrgos and the tradition surrounding Agia Paraskevi add a cultural dimension. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Molaoi, you can plan your stay around whether nature and the gorge or the town’s history should take centre stage.
Larnaka Gorge: landscape and orientation
The Larnaka Gorge begins at the summit of Mount Kourkoula, at an altitude of 916 m. The hikers’ access point is at the old town hall in the centre of Molaoi. The beginning of the gorge and the hiking access point are therefore in different places. Check local conditions before setting out.
Very steep slopes and dense forest cover characterise the course of the gorge. Its rich flora includes many endemic plants, ornamental shrubs, herbaceous vegetation, aromatic and medicinal plants, and wild fruit trees; various species of fungi are also part of this landscape. The Larnaka Gorge and the Kourkoula area are a bird sanctuary. Here, steep terrain, forest and diverse plant life come together in one natural setting.
The gorge’s differing characteristics are also important to bear in mind when visiting. The municipal tourism description published in 2017 records only the section running uphill from the centre as visible and intact; only this part is described as accessible to visitors. It is considered a place for recreation, tranquillity and experiencing nature. The remaining section, which once divided Molaoi, is covered over. From the town centre to the plain, it has become a road leading to Molaoi Hospital.
Watermills, Paliopyrgos and Agia Paraskevi
Eleven watermills once operated along the Larnaka Gorge near Molaoi. The last ceased operating in the 1970s. Alongside its present-day landscape, this number gives the gorge a tangible history of use: water and terrain were once part of the milling process here.
Paliopyrgos of Molaoi rises above the gorge on a rock, a small Byzantine or Turkish fortification. At various times, it served as an observation post for monitoring the Molaoi plain. Its position above the gorge and its former function offer another way into the town’s history.
Agia Paraskevi is the patron saint of the town of Molaoi; the church bears her name. Pilgrims come from all over the world on her feast day, 26 July. The feast of Agia Paraskevi, with pilgrims from all over the world, adds a cultural landmark for Molaoi alongside its landscape and architectural history.
Nature or local history as your focus
When choosing a holiday rental in Molaoi, the kind of trip you want can be a good starting point. If you would like to focus on landscape and nature, the gorge, with its uphill section and plant life, offers the most extensive connection. For a focus on local history, there are the former watermills, Paliopyrgos and the tradition surrounding Agia Paraskevi. These different themes can help you decide together what should shape your stay in Molaoi.
