Discover Isthmía
Accommodation in Isthmía
Isthmía combines an unusual canal history with a significant site from the ancient world. The village lies at the western end of Kalamaki Bay, near the southeastern entrance to the Loutraki Canal. The Sanctuary of Poseidon and the Isthmian Games also reflect the historical importance of the area. This makes Isthmía a destination for anyone interested in history and archaeology as well as its coastal setting.
The village by the canal
The location at the western end of Kalamaki Bay provides a starting point for getting your bearings in Isthmía. The nearby southeastern entrance to the Loutraki Canal is also part of the village’s geographical setting. The submersible bridge on the Isthmia side of the Corinth Canal is another important consideration when planning your trip.
One of the two submersible bridges currently in operation is located on the Isthmia side of the Corinth Canal. The bridges connect Central Greece with the Peloponnese. The submersible bridge on the Isthmia side has a clear usage restriction: it is for private motor vehicles only. If the canal crossing matters to your plans, bear this restriction in mind when choosing how to travel and get around.
The Sanctuary of Poseidon and museum finds
The Isthmia Museum is located in the settlement of Kyra Vrysi, next to the archaeological site of the Panhellenic Sanctuary of Poseidon. The entrance area displays individual finds, sculptures, victory stelae and a section of the sima of a temple dating to the 4th century BC. Even this selection brings together different kinds of exhibits in one place.
The collection also includes finds from Mycenaean cemeteries in the area, the Sanctuary of Poseidon, the Roman bathhouse, the Justinianic Wall, Isthmia’s Rachi Hill and the port of Kenchreai. Notable exhibits include glass panels from the Temple of Isis at the port of Kenchreai. The origins of the objects thus lead beyond the sanctuary to other sites in the region’s history.
The Isthmian Games are also part of the area’s history; they were held in the vicinity of Isthmia. The Sanctuary of Poseidon was one of the four Panhellenic sanctuaries, alongside Olympia, Delphi and Nemea. For travellers interested in antiquity, this connection provides a tangible historical context for visiting the museum and archaeological site.
The area around Isthmia is also home to the ruins of temples dedicated to Poseidon and Melikertes-Palaimon, as well as a Roman theatre and stadium.
Include culture and coastline in your trip plans
Kryfi Beach in Isthmia is an organised beach. This makes it a coastal option to consider alongside the area’s archaeological sites. If particular beach facilities are important to your plans, check their current status in advance, as facilities may change.
When looking for a holiday rental in Isthmía, consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. Are you mainly interested in the museum collection and the history of the sanctuary, or would you also like to set aside time for Kryfi Beach? For families planning together, this comparison offers a practical starting point: you can discuss different interests without needing to make every activity part of a fixed itinerary. That way, you can choose a destination and accommodation based on the experiences that matter to you.
