Feneos between Lake Doxa and monastic history
Accommodation in Feneos
Feneos brings together scenery, cultural history and outdoor activities. Nearby are the artificial Lake Doxa and churches with different historical connections; a hiking trail also leads from Feneos to a church. Another activity option is the Tarsos climbing area on the Feneos Plateau, near the village of Kato Tarsos. This lets you plan your visit around different interests, from nature and history to exercise.
Scenery in the Feneos area
The Feneos area extends across a large, triangular plateau surrounded by dense forests. Its size and wooded surroundings give the wider area a distinctive landscape that extends beyond individual destinations. If you are considering Feneos for its natural setting, the plateau is a destination in its own right, alongside the churches, lake and activities. This makes it possible to focus either on individual cultural sites or on the wider landscape, without these travel interests being mutually exclusive.
Lake Doxa and the island church
At the western end of the Feneos Valley, at the foot of the Chelmos Mountains, lies the artificial Lake Doxa. The Church of Saint Phanourios stands on a small island in the lake; locals call it Palaiomonastiro. Both names refer to the same church. It is considered the oldest Christian religious building on the Feneos Plateau. The island church’s setting links the lakeside landscape with a distinctive connection to Christian history. For travelers who want to explore scenery and religious history together, it offers a clearly identifiable destination near Feneos.
Monastic history at two sites
The history of the Monastery of Saint George connects an earlier site with a later one. The Monastery of Saint George once stood on the grounds of the Church of Saint Phanourios, also known as Palaiomonastiro. The monastery stands north of Lake Doxa; in the 17th century, it was moved there from its former site. The former monastery site on the church grounds and the site north of the lake are two different places, although both are associated with Saint George. During the 1821 Revolution, the Monastery of Saint George served as the headquarters of the Filiki Eteria. Its relocation in the 17th century and its role during the Revolution are two distinct chapters in its history.
Hiking trail and climbing area
A hiking trail from Feneos leads to the Church of Agios Georgios tou Kampou in about ten minutes. The approximate walking time makes it easy to fit the trail into your schedule as a short activity. The Tarsos climbing area is also nearby, on the Feneos Plateau near the village of Kato Tarsos. A short walk and a climbing destination thus offer two different activity options. When planning your day, you can consider whether a brief walk or climbing better suits your interests.
