Nafplion combines archaeological remains, Venetian fortresses and seaside paths. The city’s history includes both a bronze cuirass from a Bronze Age tomb and buildings with later uses and commemorative sites. There are also squares by the harbour and views over the Gulf of Argolis. These different themes give you several ways to plan your stay around the interests of your travel group.

Archaeology and the History of the City

In the historic centre, the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio presents a permanent exhibition on the cultural history of Argolis, spanning from the Palaeolithic period to the Roman era. One of its notable exhibits is a bronze Dendra cuirass, found in a chamber tomb dating to the 15th century BC. This individual find connects the collection to a specific place and a clearly defined historical period. Check the current exhibition information before visiting the museum.

Nafplion’s layered past can also be traced at other sites. The Old Parliament is a former mosque where Greece’s first parliament once met. The Trianon dates from the Ottoman period and later served first as a school and then as a cinema. These two buildings also tell the story of how their uses changed over time.

A particularly tangible memorial site is the Church of Agios Spyridon in the old town. On 27 September 1831, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Greece’s first governor, was assassinated there. A plaque and a glass case set into the entrance, containing the fatal bullet, commemorate the attack. The site connects a precisely dated event with a visible memorial.

Venetian Fortresses on the Hill and in the Harbour

Palamidi is a Venetian fortress built between 1711 and 1714, rising 216 metres above Nafplio. Bourtzi is also a Venetian castle, but it stands on the island of Agioi Theodoroi in Nafplio harbour. It is about 400 metres from the quay. Both structures exemplify Venetian fortification architecture, but their locations differ markedly: Palamidi stands above the city, while Bourtzi is in the harbour. This contrast makes it easy to orient yourself if you are interested in Nafplion’s different historic sites.

Harbour, Bay and Seaside Paths

Philellinon Square is opposite the harbour and provides a clear landmark in the cityscape. The Arvanitia Promenade offers a dedicated route for a seaside stroll. The Arvanitia route, in turn, offers views over the Gulf of Argolis. The two references to Arvanitia have different focuses: the promenade is about the seaside walk, while the route is about views of the bay.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Nafplion, your preferred experiences can be a useful starting point. Consider whether you would particularly like to focus on archaeology, the city’s history, its fortifications or seaside walking paths. If your travel group has a range of interests, the contrast between the museum, historic buildings and places by the water offers several topics to consider together when planning.
