Thanos on Limnos combines a wide sandy beach with unusual rock formations and a village church with distinctive architecture. Here, landscape and architecture sit side by side: the surrounding rocks give the beach its own character, while Agia Paraskevi draws attention to a special detail. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these interests can serve as a starting point when choosing where to stay; the beach landscape and architecture offer different focal points.

Sandy Beach and Church Architecture

Unusual rock formations surround the wide sandy beach at Thanos. Sand and rock come together here and shape the landscape. If the beach scenery is your main consideration when choosing a destination, these features give you a clear idea of what makes this beach distinctive.

Another detail awaits at the church of Agia Paraskevi. The five arches of its exonarthex, or outer vestibule, rest on monolithic columns—columns each made from a single stone. This makes an architectural term tangible through a clearly identifiable building feature: the arches and columns together form the vestibule’s distinctive structure.

The chapel of Panagia Kakaviotissa is near Thanos. It is built into a rock high on a mountain, without a roof. The journey there starts by car, followed by a nature trail leading towards the mountain summit. The walk takes about 30 minutes. This approximate walking time can help with planning your day; conditions along the route may change.

You can also factor travel times into your plans: Thanos is a 13-minute drive from the port of Myrina by car or taxi. The drive from Limnos Airport takes 26 minutes. Travel times may vary depending on traffic and conditions. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the beach, the village church, or the nearby chapel will be a particular highlight of your stay.

Limnos: Landscapes, History and Local Flavours

The wider destination of Limnos offers other kinds of scenery. Near Katalakkos are the Ammothines, a 70-stremmata area of sand dunes inland and away from the coast. Falakra features volcanic formations attributed to the meeting of lava and sea. Limnos brings together different landscape features: the wide beach at Thanos, dunes in the island’s interior and the geological formations of Falakra.

The seasons also bring a distinctive connection with nature on Limnos: thousands of migratory birds use the island as a stopover every spring and autumn on their long journeys between Europe, Asia and Africa.

The island’s history can be seen in various places and across different eras. Today’s castle in Myrina was built in 1186 by Andronikos I Komnenos and covers an area of 144 stremmata. The Treaty of Moudros between Turkey and the Allies was signed in Moudros in 1918. Poliochni, meanwhile, is an Early Bronze Age settlement with early forms of social and urban organisation.

The Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Fishing is in Nea Koutali and opened on 1 July 2006. Check the latest opening information before visiting. Traditional horse races are held in Kalliopi every year for the feast of Saint George. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the exact event dates in advance.

Regional specialities include Kalathaki and Melichloro cheeses, made from sheep’s and goat’s milk. Limnos also produces the red wine varieties Limnio and Kalambaki, as well as Muscat of Alexandria. These products add a culinary perspective on the island to its beaches, landscapes and historic sites.
