Beach destinations, a harbour and historic sites give Limnia a range of different attractions. When planning your trip, it is worth linking your preferred focus to your choice of accommodation location at an early stage.

Beaches and accommodation in Limnia

The secluded beaches around Limnia with natural shade include Limnos, Lampsa and Agia Markella. Their waters are considered crystal clear. These three names give you specific options if you want to make time by the sea the focus of your trip.

Limnia offers accommodation options and a few holiday homes. If you are considering the village as your main base, you can factor the nearby beaches into your travel plans. This gives you a choice between staying in the village and visiting several beaches. Whether you would rather plan your stay around beaches or historical and cultural interests is a useful first filter when searching for a holiday home.

For a different focus, look from Limnia harbour towards the historic island of Psara, which is reachable from there within two hours. This travel time makes Psara a separate planning option alongside the beaches and village. When choosing accommodation, you can first weigh up whether Limnia itself should be the main focus or whether Psara should have equal importance in your plans.

Volissos and its history

Volissos is a traditional village very close to Limnia. A Byzantine castle stands on a hill above the village. The village and castle add a historical dimension alongside the nearby beaches; the castle can also be considered a distinct part of the area's history.

Discover the Archaeological Collection

The Archaeological Collection of Volissos explores the history of Ariousios wine and its trade. Its topics include amphorae and drinking vessels, the cult of Dionysus, and vessels used for symposia. The collection brings together wine, trade and communal drinking culture. Visiting arrangements vary by season: in winter, visits are possible by appointment only; in summer, Saturday and Sunday are listed as visiting days.

Culture and landscape on Chios

Chios offers further cultural, historical and landscape highlights. Nea Moni Monastery was built between 1042 and 1056 and is considered an undisputed masterpiece of Byzantine art. Its mosaics are part of one of three collections from the Middle Byzantine period preserved in Greece. The permanent exhibition at the Chios Mastic Museum in Pyrgi is dedicated to traditional knowledge about mastic cultivation. In the outdoor exhibition, visitors encounter the mastic plant and its natural habitat.

The village architecture of Chios also comes in different forms. Mesta is a medieval village preserved as a monument. Its castle-like layout is defined by houses built close together to form a protective outer wall. In Pyrgi, the Xysta are black-and-white geometric decorations on house façades; the village is also home to the well-preserved Byzantine Church of Agioi Apostoloi, dating from the 14th century.

Kampos shows another side of the island: this settlement and agricultural complex combines an outstanding natural landscape with distinctive local architectural features. Narrow roads run between citrus groves and estates enclosed by high stone walls, making them ideal for walks. When organising your travel interests, you can distinguish between village architecture and walks through a cultural landscape on Chios.
