Lagkada: Harbor, Canal and Windmill
Accommodation in Lagkada
Lagkada lies on the northeast coast of Chios, in Kolokythia Bay. This seafaring village is 16 kilometers from Chios Town; the Krikeli River flows through it. The harbor, canal and windmill give Lagkada a distinctive character as a holiday destination: water shapes the landscape, while boat maintenance and the preserved mill point to work at sea and the former processing of grain. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether the harbor setting or other cultural themes on Chios will play a greater role in your vacation.
Harbor, Canal and Pebble Beach
The Glyfos Canal forms the natural entrance to Lagkada; one side is lined with eucalyptus trees. Fanaraki is a pebble beach at the eastern end of the beach by the harbor. At the same time, there are no organized beaches in the village. Pebbles by the harbor and eucalyptus trees along the canal create different accents in the coastal landscape. When planning your vacation, you can consider whether the harbor and coast or the canal and its eucalyptus-lined side appeal to you more.
Harbor Life and Local History
Mezedopoleia, ouzeries and cafés line the entire harbor of Lagkada. You can eat or have coffee there right by the sea. Which individual establishments are open may change.
On the west side of Karydas is a small boatyard, where boats belonging to recreational fishers are still repaired. On the east side of Lagkada, the main section of one of the area’s many windmills has been preserved; the windmills mainly ground wheat. The boatyard and windmill represent different aspects of the village: boat repairs here, and the former processing of grain there.
Find the Right Location for Your Trip
If you are traveling with different interests, you can distinguish between the main attractions: if dining and having coffee by the sea at the harbor are important to you, use it as a point of reference. If you are more interested in maritime craftsmanship and the history of the windmills, the boatyard and mill are other points of interest. This way, you can choose where to stay based on the things you actually want to experience.
Culture on Chios
Chios has distinctive cultural attractions beyond Lagkada, too. Nea Moni Monastery was built between 1042 and 1056 and is considered an undisputed masterpiece of Byzantine art. Its mosaics are part of one of only three collections from the Middle Byzantine period preserved in Greece. Its architectural history and mosaic art offer a different focus from Lagkada’s maritime character.
Mastic cultivation is another subject on Chios: the permanent exhibition at the Chios Mastic Museum in Pyrgi presents traditional knowledge about it. The outdoor exhibition brings visitors into contact with the mastic plant and its natural habitat. The museum opened to the public in 2016. Free parking is available at the museum; check this information before your visit. If you are choosing a holiday apartment for a trip that takes in different aspects of the island, you can include Lagkada’s harbor and local history alongside Chios’ distinctive cultural attractions in your plans.
