Sfakera: Discover Village Character and Corfu
Accommodation in Sfakera
Sfakera is a traditional village with old stone houses and paved streets. Róda Beach is about one kilometre away. This offers two distinct points to consider when planning a holiday: the character of the village and a nearby beach. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Sfakera, the approximate distance can help you weigh up the village and Róda as separate focal points for your stay.
Exploring the outdoors on Corfu
Different areas of Corfu offer different ways to enjoy active days. North Corfu is well suited to hiking and long walks thanks to its geological landscape; there are also many places to explore there. North Corfu also has cycling routes and opportunities for mountain biking. In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking.
North Corfu, with its geological landscape and cycling opportunities, offers a different focus from Achilleion, with its wooded mountains and ancient paths. If you like to choose between walks, hikes and cycling on your trip, Corfu offers a range of options. These regional activities should not be confused with the paved streets in the village of Sfakera.
Corfu Old Town: World Heritage and museums
Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Together with its two fortresses, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Those interested in urban history and architecture can experience a historic urban setting with a long building history and two fortresses.
In the Old Town, the Museum of Asian Art houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the pediment with the Gorgon depiction from the great Temple of Artemis. The museum was built primarily for this purpose. The pediment dates from 585 BC and was excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery. This connects viewing the museum piece with its history of creation and excavation.
In the historic Old Town, Casa Parlante recreates the daily life of the island’s nobility in the 19th century with moving figures and replicas of furnishings and interior decor. The permanent exhibition at the Kapodistrias Museum offers a different way to explore history: significant artefacts and documents shed light on the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor. The museum’s lush garden on the hill offers views of Corfu’s landscape and across the island.
Bus line 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route is listed for the journey from Corfu Port to the Museum of Asian Art. Check the timetable before travelling. This lets you include the visit as a separate part of your plans, without equating it with activities in Sfakera or other regions.
Landscapes, beaches and cultural events
Mon Repos is set in a 258-acre park with numerous exotic plants that have grown there over many years. In Benitses, the beach next to the marina includes an organised, narrow sandy stretch with facilities for people with disabilities. These two examples show different landscape settings on Corfu: a park with exotic vegetation and a beach by the marina.
Cultural events are also part of life in the municipal unit of Achilleion. Its villages host numerous festivals and folk festivals, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality; the individual programmes vary. If these events are important to your travel plans, you can check the specific dates in advance.
When choosing the location of your holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: Sfakera, with its old stone houses and paved streets; Róda Beach, about one kilometre away; or other Corfu experiences such as hiking, museums and historic sites. The destinations and activities mentioned are at different levels of the travel area; they complement the description of the location without replacing Sfakera’s village character.
