Glyfada is defined by its large beach with fine sand and characteristically blue-green waters. This makes the beach experience the main focus. The wider destination of Corfu adds its own cultural and landscape themes, allowing a beach-focused vacation to be complemented by other interests.

Beach and Activities in Glyfada

Glyfada Beach offers water sports and a beach volleyball court. Both add opportunities for exercise to the beach experience. If you would like to include activities in your travel plans, these options may be relevant.

The beach also has facilities for people with disabilities; check locally what provisions are currently available. Sun umbrellas, sun loungers, and showers are among the beach amenities; check their availability locally for your trip. Use of the beach is free of charge. Check the applicable conditions before your visit.

Corfu: City History and Culture

The wider destination of Corfu offers a distinct strand of interest in the island’s history. Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Together with the two fortresses, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The almost entirely preserved urban fabric and buildings from three centuries give the Old Town its distinctive historic character.

The museums offer different perspectives. The Museum of Asian Art in Corfu Old Town contains more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. Casa Parlante recreates the daily life of the island’s aristocracy in the 19th century with animated figures and recreated furnishings and interiors. Collections from different regions of the world are thus presented alongside an engaging depiction of historic life on Corfu.

The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery. The permanent exhibition at the Kapodistrias Museum offers a different historical perspective: significant artefacts and documents explore the history of Corfu, Europe, and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor.

Bus route 2, on the Mantouki–Kanoni route, is indicated for travel from Corfu Port to the Museum of Asian Art. Check the timetable before travelling. This makes it possible to consider a visit to the Old Town as a separate part of planning a trip to Corfu, without equating it with the beach experience in Glyfada.

Hiking Trails and Events on Corfu

The wider destination of Corfu also offers other ways to stay active. In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths cross the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros, and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The 180-kilometre Corfu Trail passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 one-day stages. These descriptions refer to different scales: trails in named mountains and a long-distance route through several settlements.

The villages of the municipal unit of Achilleion host numerous festivals and folk festivals, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality. The specific events programme varies. Alongside beaches and urban history, hiking and cultural events are therefore different interests to consider on a trip to Corfu.
