Getting to know Gaios through its cultural history brings together a range of different topics: the Folklore Museum brings together finds, clothing and everyday objects, while the water supply system and a monument at the harbour entrance offer further historical points of interest. The islets of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia lie opposite the harbour. These highlights can help you shape your stay around your interests and decide which topics you would like to explore when choosing a holiday rental in Gaios.

The Folklore Museum and its history

The Folklore Museum was founded in 1996 by the Cultural Association of Paxos. Its purpose was to preserve the island’s cultural heritage and create a focal point for its future development. It is housed in the neoclassical building of Gaios’s old primary school. The school was built in 1906; the municipal administration made the building available to the association for this purpose. Its founding, the school’s history and its present-day use are therefore part of a shared local history.

The first room displays fossils, prehistoric tools, classical amphorae, weapons from the Venetian period and later, coins from various eras and other tools. The collection spans early finds through to objects from later periods, without being limited to a single era. Everyday life is represented too: the collection includes clothing and underwear, a 400-year-old bed with mattresses, a cradle and other women’s accessories.

Everyday objects, the kitchen and art

One room is set up as a historic kitchen. Oil lamps, clay plates, hanging scales, oil containers and brass utensils feature in this display. In contrast to the fossils, amphorae and coins, the focus here is on objects from everyday life. The collection therefore offers various points of interest if you are interested in material culture: from historic tools and clothing to the furnishings of a kitchen.

Another room serves as a Municipal Art Gallery. It displays one of the rare original copies of a work about Paxos, written by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria in the late 19th century. In the courtyard, you can see parts of old olive presses, oil measuring vessels and stone objects. These exhibits add further insights into local objects and the study of the island.

Historical points of interest at the harbour and on the islets

The history of the water supply is another of Gaios’s notable historical subjects. The water supply system was built in the 19th century during the British occupation and is considered the most significant on the entire island. A 2.5-metre-high bronze statue of Georgios Anemogiannis stands at the harbour entrance. Together, these details illustrate different aspects of the town’s history: a system dating from the period of British occupation and a monument at a clearly identified location.

The islets of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia lie opposite the harbour. They are fully accessible during the day. However, prior permission from the municipality is required to enter Saint Nicholas Castle. The site is not open on a permanent basis and has no fixed visiting hours. If you plan to visit the Castle, arrange access with the municipality in advance. This makes clear the distinction between access to the islets and the special conditions for the Castle.

Gaios as a base for your stay

The area’s cultural history offers a concrete focus when choosing where to stay: you can consider whether you would like to include the Folklore Museum’s collections, the history of the water supply or the points of interest at the harbour in your trip. If the islets are also part of your plans, remember to take the different access conditions for Saint Nicholas Castle into account. These interests can help you decide which topics matter most when planning your trip and searching for a holiday rental in Gaios, without requiring any particular accommodation features.
