Discover Lygia: Riniasa Castle and Culture in Preveza
Accommodation in Lygia
Lygia combines a connection to the beach with a castle in the surrounding area. At the same time, the town can be considered in the broader context of the wider Preveza destination. Riniasa Castle brings Byzantine architecture and a distinctive layout of four defensive sections into the picture. In Preveza, archaeological, cultural and culinary themes add to the experience. When searching for a holiday apartment, it helps to sort these highlights according to the places and interests you want to shape your vacation.
Riniasa Castle and Lygia Beach
Riniasa Castle lies between the present-day municipalities of Riza and Lygia, in the surrounding area of the destination. Its architecture is Byzantine; the complex includes four defensive sections and an acropolis, which formed its highest fortified part. Here, “acropolis” refers to the highest fortified area of the castle. This makes the layout of the complex clear without reducing its history to the name of a single castle.
There is, however, an important caveat for visitors: access on foot is problematic and dangerous. Necessary work has not been carried out, so the castle is practically inaccessible to visitors. Check the local situation before considering a visit. Given these access conditions, the castle should not be planned as an easily accessible excursion destination.
Lygia Beach also has a named landmark nearby: a sight known as “Κάστρο της Δέσπως” is located there.
Culture, cycling route and regional cuisine in the wider Preveza destination
The archaeological site of Nikopolis has a main route and six secondary routes connecting nine monumental areas. This route network gives the site a clear internal structure. The Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis complements this historical perspective: it presents the city’s history spanning more than a thousand years through various aspects of its residents’ private and public lives.
In Preveza’s historic city centre stands the Venetian Clock Tower, dating from 1752. The Church of Agios Athanasios is one of the oldest churches in Preveza. It was built during Venetian rule in the early 18th century and is known for its rare frescoes from 1780. The construction date and the frescoes offer different historical perspectives: the church’s origins and the dated wall paintings each provide their own point of reference for exploring its cultural history.
The Pantokratoras Fortress tells a different story. Ali Pasha had it built in the early 19th century to plans by the French engineer Yadocourt. Its location served to give complete control over shipping at the entrance to the Amvrakikos Gulf. Agios Andreas Castle is also among Preveza’s historic sites: in October 1980, a ministerial decision designated it as a monument worthy of preservation.
For a more active perspective, Preveza’s second coastal cycling route covers about 10 kilometres. It has a low difficulty level and connects the town beach, Kiani Akti, Pantokratoras, the fishing harbour, Alonaki and the settlement of Drosia. Road conditions can change; check them before setting out. The route offers a different way to discover Preveza from its historic buildings and archaeological site.
Regional products are also part of the picture in the wider Preveza destination: these include shrimp from the Amvrakikos Gulf and the famous bottarga from the same gulf. These culinary specialities add a distinct regional focus to the archaeological, religious and military-history themes.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Lygia, your own vacation plans are a useful guide: would you like to focus on Lygia, its beach and the surrounding area, or also include culture, a cycling route and regional products in the wider Preveza destination? Make your choice based on which of these highlights you want to include in your plans.
