Archangelos offers a tangible introduction to the region’s history: remains of the Roman aqueduct can be found in the village, while ancient sites and a historic rock lie nearby. Visitors interested in Roman structures and the history of ancient cities can shape their stay around these different traces. The sites differ not only in name, but also in their classification and location.

Roman traces in Archangelos and the region

Remains of the Roman aqueduct can be found in Archangelos itself. A look at the water supply across the wider region adds to this local evidence: the 50-kilometre-long Roman aqueduct channel carried water from the springs of the Louros to the two basins of the Nymphaeum of Nikopolis. The remains in the village and the described waterway bring different aspects of Roman infrastructure into focus, without requiring a single sightseeing trip to link them together.

Ancient sites nearby

The historic rock of Zalongo lies seven kilometres north of Archangelos. The ruins of the ancient city of Kassope are also seven kilometres to the north. The same distance and direction make it easy to compare the two locations; in terms of subject matter, they lead to different themes: the historic rock on one hand, and the remains of an ancient city on the other. Nikopolis and its monuments are twelve kilometres from Archangelos in the direction of Preveza. This gives you three different reference points for orientation, without implying a particular route or walking time based on the distances.

Archaeology and urban history in Preveza

In the wider destination of Preveza, you can also explore the history of Nikopolis through its archaeological site and museum. At the site, a main route and six secondary routes connect nine monumental areas. The Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis presents the city’s more than thousand-year history through various aspects of the private and public lives of its inhabitants. The site and museum therefore focus on different themes: monumental areas on the one hand, and city life on the other.

You can explore further historical themes in the city of Preveza. The Venetian Clock Tower stands in the historic city centre and dates from 1752. The Church of Agios Athanasios is one of the oldest churches in Preveza; it was built during Venetian rule in the early 18th century and is known for its rare frescoes from 1780. The Pantokratoras Fortress was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha, to plans by the French engineer Yadocourt. Its location enabled complete control of shipping at the entrance to the Amvrakikos Gulf. Agios Andreas Castle was designated a monument worthy of preservation by ministerial decision in October 1980.

Further perspectives: cycling route and local products

If you would like to explore Preveza by bicycle, there is a second coastal cycling route. It is about ten kilometres long, has a low difficulty level, and connects the city beach, Kiani Akti, Pantokratoras, the fishing harbour, Alonaki and the settlement of Drosia. The route offers a different perspective from the archaeological themes; its length and difficulty rating can help you take this option into account when planning your day.

Local products also offer a distinct way to experience the Preveza region: these include shrimp from the Amvrakikos Gulf and the famous bottarga from the same gulf. If you choose a holiday rental, you can focus your search on the main theme of your stay: Archangelos is associated with the local aqueduct remains and nearby ancient sites, while the churches, fortresses, museum and city themes mentioned above are associated with Preveza. Consider which of these historical and regional perspectives will shape your trip.
