Papingo lies at the foot of Astraka and consists of the two settlements of Megalo Papigo and Mikro Papigo. Five distinctive towers of Astraka rise above them. The settlements are about two kilometres apart; their names help locate routes and local traditions.

Mountain scenery and natural pools

Trails from Megalo Papigo and Mikro Papigo lead to the natural stone pools of Ovires Rogovou, which are fed by the waters of the Rogovou stream. This makes them a natural destination fed by a stream, as well as a place to enjoy the mountain scenery and its connection to the watercourse. If you want to discover Papingo’s landscape, the towers of Astraka and the pools are two specific features that define the area.

Hiking with different points of reference

Certified hiking guides operate in the Papigo area. They can accompany visitors on trails on Mount Tymfi or along the route to Drakolimni (Dragon Lake). These are clearly named destinations where guided hikes are available. Which one interests you for your stay depends on whether you want to focus on Mount Tymfi or Drakolimni.

The trail to the Astraka Refuge begins in Mikro Papigo and follows the central cobbled village path from the church. It forms part of National Hiking Trail 03. The church and cobbled village path provide a specific landmark for the starting point in the village; the route is also part of a named hiking trail. Check the current trail conditions locally before setting out.

The hiking route collection for Zagori as a whole comprises 32 routes. Seven are classified as mountain hikes because they take a long time and traverse high altitudes. This classification makes the category’s profile clear: duration and altitude are important considerations if you are planning a longer hike at high altitude. These regional figures complement the specific information about trails and starting points in Papigo.

Festival traditions and finding your way around the village

A local festival takes place in Megalo Papigo each year around the feast day of Prophet Elias on 20 July. It usually begins on the evening of 19 July and lasts for two days. If the festival is a key factor in your trip, you can take this customary schedule into account when planning your dates and check the festival dates before you travel.

Near the village square, the Papigo Information Centre is housed in the stone building of the former primary school, next to the Church of the Archangels. The building and its location provide a specific landmark in the village, even if you first explore Papigo by its settlements and trails.

Choose a settlement as your starting point

When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth matching your planned activities to the two settlements. The festival takes place in Megalo Papigo; the trail to the Astraka Refuge begins in Mikro Papigo. The settlements are about two kilometres apart. This lets you consider which settlement best suits the focus of your stay, rather than viewing Papingo as a single starting point.
